Tien Giang is a province in the Mekong Delta (MD), and is also a province in the Southern Key Economic Zone (SEZ). It stretches along the northern bank of the Tien River with a length of over 120 km; with geographical coordinates of 105
Tien Giang province borders the following provinces:
- North and Northeast border Long An province and Ho Chi Minh City,
- To the West and Southwest, it borders Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces.
- To the South borders Ben Tre province,
- East borders the East Sea.
Tien Giang has a natural area of 2,510.61 km2 , accounting for 0.76% of the country's area and 6.2% of the Mekong Delta area.
In the development orientation of Tien Giang, three key economic zones have been specifically divided: The Eastern district area is the area with great potential for marine economy and development of shipbuilding industry, seaports and maritime transport, seafood processing; along with the potential for tourism and fishing logistics services... The Western district area has the strength of producing food, especially the largest fruit trees in the province, associated with the development of agricultural processing industry and services along the economic axis of National Highway 1. In addition, the area also has great potential for tourism development, where three ecological zones converge such as salty and fresh ecology associated with river ecology, fruit trees and floodplain ecology of Dong Thap Muoi... And the My Tho - Chau Thanh city area is the driving force, the locomotive promoting socio-economic development and proactively integrating and cooperating economically with the Southern Key Economic Zone, the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area and the Mekong Delta region.
Besides, Tien Giang has many advantages in exploiting and using natural resources to develop commodity production, expand product consumption markets, enhance cooperation and economic, cultural and tourism exchange with provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta and Southeast regions as well as with Southeast Asian countries, especially countries sharing resources along the Mekong River.
Based on the identification of strengths of each region, Tien Giang has focused on comprehensive development of agriculture - rural areas in the direction of commodity production; intensive farming, specialized farming, application of biotechnology; reorganizing the agricultural production system in the direction of good agricultural practices, safety (GAP) associated with the consumption system and serving the processing industry... Stabilizing investment in about 60 thousand hectares of rice cultivation land to ensure food security and export targets; forming specialized areas that are the province's strengths such as fruit trees, clean vegetables... Continuing to exploit strengths in developing livestock in the direction of industrialization, improving product quality and protecting the environment... Developing aquaculture in the direction of planning farming areas, intensive farming to increase productivity, diversifying farming objects, closely combining farming, preservation, processing and environmental protection management; Focus on developing aquatic products with domestic consumption value and export processing such as fish, shrimp, clams, fish cages... on Tien River, sandbanks, and coastal alluvial flats.
In recent years, the province has attracted investment to develop industries in the direction of diversifying products, applying high technology, and focusing on industries and fields that the province has advantages in such as processing industry, biotechnology, mechanical industry, manufacturing for agriculture - rural areas and supporting industries for the Southern Key Economic Zone and the Mekong Delta. Focus on attracting investment to rapidly develop approved industrial parks and clusters while consolidating and improving the efficiency of existing industrial parks and clusters. By 2020, the province strives to have 7-8 concentrated industrial parks and about 30 industrial clusters with a total area of about 8,700 hectares, mainly concentrated in Tan Phuoc and Go Cong areas.
