On the morning of January 3rd, Saigon Zoo officially introduced the Phu Quy Cat Tuong capybara family, attracting a large number of visitors. From 8 am onwards, many visitors arrived to participate in the lucky draw and interact with the capybara family. This animal has become a "trend" among young people, with many fashion products and toys inspired by them. The event took place in a joyful atmosphere with many attractive activities, giving visitors the opportunity to interact with and pet the adorable capybaras. Recently, these adorable animals have come to be regarded as " foreign ministers" because they are very friendly to humans, sociable with their own kind, and enjoy interacting with other species. Bao Tran, 20 years old, shared: "I'm so happy to know that the Saigon Zoo has capybaras. Now I don't need to travel far to see and pet them right here in Ho Chi Minh City. I hope there will be more events like this so that everyone can learn about animals." Minh, 25, said: "This is the first time I've seen them and I'm very excited. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more similar events so that everyone can work together to protect rare animals." The children enjoyed feeding capybara directly. Only 20 lucky visitors were allowed to enter the enclosure and interact with the capybaras on the first day. The zoo will open to visitors on January 9th when the capybaras are more accustomed to human presence. Trong Phuc, an animal caretaker, said that the capybara family is monitored by cameras and cared for with a proper diet, with their health constantly being monitored. The capybara is the world's largest rodent, known for its friendly and approachable nature. They can grow up to 60cm tall, 1.2m long, and weigh up to 100kg. Currently, the zoo is caring for four capybaras, two males and two females, all six months old and weighing between 15 and 20 kg. The management has named them "Phú - Quý - Cát - Tường" (meaning "Wealth, Prosperity, Good Fortune"), hoping for good things in the new year. The launch of the capybara is part of the zoo's efforts to raise awareness about biodiversity and protect endangered species.
The capybara, scientifically known as Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, is known as the largest rodent in the world. Resembling a water pig, capybaras are capable of living near water and are well adapted to wet environments. Capybaras are primarily found in South America, in countries such as Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Argentina. They typically live near water, such as riverbanks, lakes, ponds, and river deltas. Capybaras often inhabit mangrove forests and flooded grasslands, areas with abundant vegetation and water sources.
