According to Kitco, the spot price of gold in the world market at 4:30 AM Vietnam time today was $2,618.77 USD/ounce. The price of gold today remains unchanged compared to yesterday. Converted using the USD exchange rate on the free market (25,760 VND/USD), the world gold price is approximately 81.5 million VND/ounce (excluding taxes and fees). Thus, the price of SJC gold bars is currently 3.2 million VND/ounce higher than the international gold price.

According to Kitco, the market will close mid-week on January 1st, so many analysts are still focused on celebrating the new year rather than monitoring financial markets. Unless a major surprise occurs, many analysts predict that gold prices will remain volatile between rising bond yields and safe-haven demand due to increasing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

Last week, gold prices were capped at $2,650 per ounce; however, the market was able to withstand significant headwinds as 10-year Treasury yields rose to 4.64%, their highest level in seven months.

The precious metal continued to fluctuate within a range toward the end of the week, even as bond yields remained high above 4.6%. Spot gold futures were last trading at $2,618.30 per ounce, down 0.57% on the day. Meanwhile, gold prices fell 0.18% for the week.

“Gold’s resilience this week is bolstered by escalating geopolitical tensions. Investors are closely watching conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East,” James Hyerczyk, market analyst at FX Empire, said in a note on Friday. “Israeli airstrikes targeting Houthi targets in Yemen and Russian drone strikes in Ukraine have reinforced gold’s appeal as a safe-haven asset. This geopolitical backdrop continues to keep gold in the game, with risk-averse traders further fueling the outbreak.”

At the same time, some analysts note that President-elect Donald Trump's social media comments, expressing interest in annexing Canada, the Panama Canal, and Greenland, also increase geopolitical tensions and instability.

Hyerczyk said the key support level to watch next week will be $2,607 per ounce. He added that gold needs to break above $2,665.65 to regain upward momentum. In the current context, he noted that the path of least resistance appears to be downward.

"The short-term outlook for gold remains pessimistic, with rising yields and a stronger US dollar acting as more powerful drivers than geopolitical risks," he said. "However, the current move is taking place during a historically slow trading week, and thinner trading volumes could limit further progress."

Looking at the economic data, 2024 ends on a fairly light schedule as the market will receive some home sales figures and manufacturing data. The market will also continue to monitor the US labor market, particularly the weekly jobless claims data next week.

This past week, the number of ongoing unemployment benefit claims rose to its highest level in a year. Data shows that while the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time remained relatively stable, laid-off workers are struggling to find new jobs.

Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial, said the persistently high number of unemployment benefit claims indicates a slowdown in the job market.
