Entering puberty, students experience psychophysiological changes, and they are often curious about relationships with the opposite sex. Therefore, they are at increased risk of early sexual activity, unsafe sex, and sexual abuse, leading to consequences such as early pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The root cause of these problems stems from a lack of understanding about gender, sexuality, and self-protection skills.
To provide students with knowledge about sexuality, schools in Cai Nuoc district have recently paid great attention to educating teenagers about reproductive health.
Mr. Tran Hong Duong, Principal of Quang Trung Junior High School (Hung My commune, Cai Nuoc district), said: “At the junior high school level, students begin to experience changes in their psychology and physiology, so sex education for students is always a priority for the school. This activity is implemented by the school with many different contents and forms.”
Specifically, sex education will be integrated by teachers into several subjects such as Biology, Civics, Literature, etc., and also incorporated into weekly flag-raising ceremonies, class activities, and so on.
Representatives from the School Psychology Counseling Team of Quang Trung Secondary School are ready to listen to students' thoughts and feelings in order to answer their questions.
Ms. Dang Kieu Uyen, a teacher at Quang Trung Secondary School, said: “The school established a School Psychology Counseling Club to answer students' questions about adolescent emotions and feelings, gender issues, etc. As a member of the counseling team, I always try to convey information appropriately and provide reasonable answers to prevent students from seeking misleading explanations on social media.”
Nguyen Tuyet Huynh (Class 8A1, Quang Trung Secondary School) shared: “I rarely ask my parents directly about questions regarding sexuality and relationships. Instead, I seek answers from books and teachers. Additionally, subjects integrated into the curriculum and extracurricular programs provide me with some knowledge about reproductive health care during puberty.”
Recently, Vo Thi Sau Primary and Secondary School (Cai Nuoc town, Cai Nuoc district) has successfully implemented sex education activities for its students. Besides integrating it into relevant subjects, the school has also carried out several activities to promote and educate students on sexuality and adolescent reproductive health through extracurricular programs such as life skills education and the "Journey of Love" program.
The student health record book at Vo Thi Sau Primary and Secondary School also contributes to monitoring and caring for students' reproductive health.
Ms. Tran My Phuong, a Literature teacher at Vo Thi Sau Primary and Secondary School, said: “Through extracurricular activities, students understand and have their questions about gender and adolescent reproductive health answered. In addition, as a homeroom teacher, I am always ready to meet with and listen to their innermost thoughts to provide advice and help them access sex education more easily.”
Tran Ngoc Han (Class 9A1, Vo Thi Sau Primary and Secondary School) shared: “When teachers conveyed information about reproductive health care, sexuality, and relationships, I gained useful knowledge to build pure friendships during my school years, and became aware of each part of my body to protect myself and prevent others from harming me.”
According to Mr. Le Minh Kha, Principal of Vo Thi Sau Primary and Secondary School, sex education is not about "leading students astray" but about guiding them on the right and safe path; contributing to raising awareness and changing students' behavior regarding reproductive health, so that they behave appropriately and thus take good care of their own health.
