This Google feature will allow users to receive notifications directly on the lock screen, status bar, always-on display, and notification panel. Unlike regular notifications, Live Updates provide information about the progress of a specific task.
Google Maps will be the first to benefit from Live Updates on Android 16.
Benefits for Google Maps users
In Android 16, Google Maps will be the first app to support Live Updates. Notifications will be displayed as green arrows, making it easy for users to identify them as belonging to Google Maps thanks to the app's distinctive icon. The information displayed on the chip includes the time until the next turn, the estimated time of arrival (ETA), and data related to each trip.
When the arrow is tapped, users will see a control panel open providing more detailed information such as the distance to travel, the estimated time to reach the destination, and the time until the next turn. This feature is currently available on the Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 Beta 2.1.
Here are some screenshots of Google Maps in action with Live Updates.
In addition to Google Maps, Live Updates will also display the progress of food deliveries from several delivery platforms, the distance to booked rides from Uber or Lyft, as well as information from sporting events. However, it should be noted that this feature is still in the testing phase and will undergo further improvements before the stable version of Android 16 is released in June.
iOS users may find the Live Updates feature familiar as it's similar to the Live Activities feature on Dynamic Island and the iPhone's Lock Screen, which allows for the display of various updates in real time.
