(CLO) Google has just announced that it will replace Google Assistant on Android phones with the Gemini AI model this year.

In a blog post Friday, the company said it will gradually upgrade Google Assistant to Gemini over the next few months. By the end of the year, Google Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices and will be removed from app stores.

“We’ll also be upgrading tablets, cars, and connected devices like headphones and smartwatches to Gemini,” Google said. “We’ll also be bringing a new experience, integrating Gemini into home devices like smart speakers, displays, and TVs.”

Google promises to provide more details in the coming months. In the meantime, Google Assistant will continue to work on existing devices.

Before discontinuing support for Google Assistant, Google focused on improving Gemini's user experience, especially for those who regularly use familiar Assistant features.

Replacing Google Assistant with Gemini isn't a surprise, especially since Google's Pixel 9 phones already use Gemini as their primary virtual assistant by default. According to Google, Gemini has more advanced capabilities than Assistant, allowing users to find information and help in new ways through tools like Gemini Live and Deep Research.

The change is part of Google's long-term strategy to focus on artificial intelligence (AI), similar to how Apple is developing Siri with more advanced AI models. Integrating Gemini into more devices also shows that Google is betting big on its AI platform to compete with other virtual assistants on the market.
