Within the framework of the Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation Technical Assistance Project (VFBC) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this morning, March 12th, in Ta Long commune, Dakrong district, the Provincial VFBC Project Management Board, in coordination with the Biodiversity Conservation Component implementing unit and the Dakrong Nature Reserve Management Board, organized a workshop to gather feedback on a pilot plan for forest restoration based on cooperative benefit-sharing with the community on encroached special-use forest land within the Dakrong Nature Reserve.

The Dakrong Nature Reserve covers a natural area of over 37,000 hectares with a biodiversity of approximately 1,452 species of vascular plants, 91 species of mammals, 193 species of birds, and 49 species of reptiles and amphibians. Currently, a portion of the Dakrong Nature Reserve's land is still being encroached upon by local people. Addressing and reclaiming the encroached areas of the special-use forest is proving quite challenging.

The overall objectives of the pilot project for forest restoration based on cooperative benefit-sharing with the community on encroached special-use forest land within the Dakrong Nature Reserve are: to address the issue of forest restoration and benefit-sharing with the community on encroached special-use forest land; to successfully develop a model for reforestation using native trees (Trầu, Dổi) on shifting cultivation land within the reserve boundaries; and to develop appropriate benefit-sharing solutions for local people currently encroaching on special-use forest land.

To effectively implement the pilot project for forest restoration based on cooperative benefit sharing with the community on encroached forest land within the Dakrong Nature Reserve, the workshop initially focused on discussing and providing feedback for the pilot project in Huc Nghi commune (Dakrong district) to reclaim encroached forest land for forest restoration in the Dakrong Nature Reserve.

The pilot project will be implemented in Sub-areas 724A and 730 in Huc Nghi commune. The target areas are forest land within the Dakrong Nature Reserve that is currently being encroached upon by local people.

This pilot project will regenerate the forest and share benefits with the community in the encroached area. This will generate additional income from planting and caring for the special-use forest, as well as increase community income from forest by-products, contributing to biodiversity conservation in the area and the Dakrong Nature Reserve.

At the same time, after the successful implementation of this pilot project, it will serve as a basis for replication in communes with forest land encroachment within the Dakrong Nature Reserve and consideration for expansion to other areas in the province.
