At a recent study abroad seminar with the participation of nearly 30 prestigious universities from the US, Canada, and the UK, experts gave their views on the current career trends of international students.

In the US, according to Open Doors report, the most popular majors for international students today include: Engineering, Business, Computer Science , Mathematics and Statistics. The influencing factors are assessed due to the large demand for human resources and H1B visa prospects.

In Canada, the majors that are chosen by many international students are also popular, similar to the US such as: Business, Engineering, Health Care, Computer Science. Over the past decade, experts assess that the prominent trend in Canada is still the increase in human resource demand in the health and Computer Science fields.

In the UK, the most popular majors for international students are Business, Law, Computer Science, Psychology, and Social Sciences. In particular, studying Law directly from university is easier here than in the US and Canada. Therefore, the proportion of international students coming to the UK to study Law or Medicine will be higher.

Overall assessment, Ms. Le Dieu Linh - Deputy Director of Summit Education Organization said that the two majors of Business and Engineering are still the majors that have great attraction for foreign students in the US, Canada, UK or Australia, due to the similarity in the demand of the global labor market. However, in each country, international students will also have more distinct major choices.

“For example, in the UK, the most popular major is Law; in Canada, it is Health; while in Australia, it is Agriculture; in the US, it is Engineering and Computer Science. This difference depends on the priority policy for recruiting international students in each country and the specific human resource needs of each region,” said Ms. Linh.

Experts also note that this is a common trend in each country, but each university, especially the top universities in the country, has an outstanding curriculum. To make the right choice, when planning the country to go to, candidates need to think about choosing the right school and major.

“When choosing a major, you also need to consider whether you will return to Vietnam to live or stay abroad. Some majors may be very 'hot' abroad but not so 'hot' in Vietnam and vice versa.

For example, the Marketing industry is not too 'hot' in the US or Canada because the general level of corporations here is very developed. But the Psychology industry in these countries may have 'more room' to develop than in Vietnam," this expert said.

In addition, Ms. Linh also believes that when choosing a major, students should not only focus on the "hottest" major now but also think about the next 20 years, because the current trending major can decline. "Therefore, the major must focus on survival skills," Ms. Linh said.

“In the next 5-10 years, how will career trends change? Students and parents need to learn carefully before deciding,” said Mr. Linh.

This expert believes that the occupations with the potential for recruitment growth in the next 10 years for international students include: Data scientist (recruitment demand growth in the period 2023-2033 is 36%), software development engineer (17.9%), information technology analyst (16.3%)...
