While on a trip to Da Nang at 25 weeks pregnant, a pregnant woman from Singapore suddenly showed unusual symptoms and was rushed to the emergency room at Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital on March 16, 2026. After examination, doctors diagnosed the tourist with severe preeclampsia, a particularly dangerous obstetric complication that directly threatens the lives of both mother and fetus.
Dr. Tran Dinh Vinh, Director of Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that with the goal of prolonging the pregnancy as much as possible to increase the baby's chances of survival, doctors implemented intensive medical treatment and closely monitored the condition of both mother and child daily. “For a 25-week-old fetus, every day spent in the mother's womb is incredibly precious, giving the lungs, brain, and other developing organs more opportunities to grow. However, after two weeks of treatment, the fetus showed signs of severe fetal distress. Facing the life-threatening risk to both mother and child, the obstetrics and pediatrics team held an urgent consultation and decided to terminate the pregnancy,” Dr. Tran Dinh Vinh informed.
The baby girl was born via cesarean section at 27 weeks and 1 day of gestation, weighing only 720 grams. Belonging to the group of extremely premature and underweight babies, she faced a series of harsh survival risks from the very first moments of her life.
According to hospital leaders, the neonatal resuscitation team was on standby in the operating room to receive the baby. After birth, the baby received respiratory support and skin-to-skin contact with the mother. In the first few minutes of life, the 720-gram baby felt the warmth of its mother, a brief but sacred moment for the family and the medical team.
However, due to severe preeclampsia requiring continued monitoring and intensive post-operative treatment, the mother was forced to temporarily part ways with her child. At one hour old, the baby was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized treatment. From here, the challenging journey of this tiny life began, facing the unpredictable complications of extremely premature and low-birth-weight conditions.
“The first few days of a baby's life are a truly challenging battle. Due to their underdeveloped organs, infants face many serious health problems such as neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, hypoglycemia, and neonatal infections. At times, babies require mechanical ventilation, vasopressors to maintain circulation, and continuous monitoring in an intensive care unit,” shared Dr. Tran Dinh Vinh.
According to doctors, for extremely premature babies, the treatment journey is not measured in days but in weeks and months, filled with challenges. Every gram of weight gained, every spontaneous breath, or every successful feeding is an invaluable milestone in the child's growth journey. This journey is supported by the efforts of the medical team, nurses, and the unwavering companionship of the family.
“The close collaboration between families and hospitals has created a comprehensive care environment. Beyond treating illnesses, the medical team also accompanies parents through each stage of development, guiding them on caregiving skills, nutrition, and providing psychological support, making the family the strongest support system for the child,” said Dr. Tran Dinh Vinh.

After months of dedicated effort and close monitoring, a miracle occurred. From a life weighing only 720 grams, completely dependent on modern resuscitation methods, the baby gradually overcame critical complications to breathe and feed well on its own. On June 22, 2026, at a gestational age of 39 weeks, the baby weighed 2,655 grams, was in stable health, had good reflexes, and was ready to return home to the happy embrace of its family.
The journey of this extremely premature baby is a testament to the effectiveness of interdisciplinary obstetrics and pediatrics collaboration and neonatal resuscitation capabilities at Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, while also affirming the indispensable role of the family. The story of the healthy 720-gram baby returning home is a hymn to medicine and medical ethics, to dedication and tireless efforts to protect life from the very first days. Because sometimes, miracles don't happen in a single moment, but are woven together from daily perseverance, from the love of parents and the unwavering dedication of the medical team.
The husband of the expectant mother emotionally shared: “We came to Da Nang for a vacation and planned to return to Singapore to await the birth of our child. However, the night before our flight home, my wife suddenly fell ill and was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia... Fortunately, both my wife and child are safe thanks to the dedicated care of the doctors and nurses. No words can express the gratitude of my family for the understanding, friendliness, and professional support of the medical team here.”
