Head coach Hansi Flick arrived at the club's headquarters, at the earliest - 3 days in advance, with 4 main issues to be resolved quickly, including meeting directly with captain goalkeeper Ter Stegen to finalize his future.
Although the 33-year-old goalkeeper also arrived on Friday, he did not meet his compatriot coach and the conversation between them will take place today (July 12).
However, perhaps the conversation between them is just a formality, because Hansi Flick has made a clear decision with the Barca veteran. According to MB, this strategist will tell Ter Stegen directly that he no longer relies on him next season, and will be the team's number 3 goalkeeper, after new recruit Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny.
If Ter Stegen accepts that, he can still stay at Barca and fight for his position, otherwise he can find a new destination.
What Hansi Flick doesn't like about Ter Stegen is his attitude, especially towards the end of last season. Despite being the captain, his compatriot lacked patience, from hinting to openly wanting to be brought back into the starting lineup after returning from injury.
Ter Stegen is still under contract with Barca until the summer of 2028 and is one of the highest paid players at the Nou Camp. Barca hope their captain's departure will help free up some of the wage bill.
But the German goalkeeper is said to have no intention of letting Hansi Flick and Barca have their way, and is determined to stay. In case the Catalan team forces him to leave, Ter Stegen will take every penny – compensation for the remaining 3 years of his contract.
