Money lost, trouble gained.

Despite being saved by doctors at Bach Mai Hospital after emergency surgery, 38-year-old patient D.TP. is still in shock and fear after experiencing a very fragile period of health due to trusting in a coffee enema method for body detoxification. Previously, Ms. P. had to be rushed to the hospital due to severe lower pelvic pain accompanied by bloody diarrhea, after undergoing a coffee enema detoxification treatment at a private clinic.

Ms. P. had used this detoxification method twice, each time a week apart; but on the third time, she experienced severe lower abdominal pain accompanied by bleeding from the anus, so she was rushed to the emergency room. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Khiem, Deputy Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Bach Mai Hospital, said that the surgery revealed a rupture of the lower third of the rectum, causing a retroperitoneal abscess. The surgical team sutured the rectal rupture, performed extensive retroperitoneal drainage, and created a colostomy in the sigmoid colon. Two weeks after the surgery, the patient was discharged, eating and living normally, but will have to undergo another surgery in a few months to close the colostomy.

Many forums and social media platforms are spreading a method of detoxifying the body by administering coffee enemas to the colon, aiming to expel waste and toxins from the body and improve health after cleansing. A few keywords like "body detoxification with coffee enemas" or "coffee enemas for body cleansing" on Google or Facebook will yield hundreds of thousands of results providing detailed instructions on this method.

Among these, there are numerous video clips instructing viewers on how to use "specialized" coffee specifically for colon detoxification, boiling it with filtered water. Notably, this method is advertised as only needing to be done at home or at a private clinic. Along with this, many products and tools for coffee enema detox are widely sold online, some even bearing the labels of medical facilities.

Lack of scientific basis

According to experts, the digestive tract helps break down and absorb food to provide energy for the body. The digestive tract begins at the mouth, passes through the esophagus to the stomach, then to the small and large intestines. The digestive system helps eliminate waste products from food and drink. This elimination process involves the large intestine, also known as the colon, and ends at the rectum. Meanwhile, an enema involves pumping liquid from the anus into the rectum; these liquids soften the stool. This method is indicated in cases of constipation, difficulty defecating, when colon cleansing is needed for procedures or surgery, or in some special cases requiring enema for diagnosis or treatment.

According to Doctor Nguyen Thanh Khiem, injecting coffee into the rectum reduces rectal stimulation, eventually leading to a loss of rectal reflexes. Simultaneously, this loss of rectal reflexes increases the risk of rectal rupture during subsequent enemas, as patients no longer feel the urge to defecate. Worse still, coffee enemas can cause colitis and disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome.

"Colon lavage is a treatment method that should be prescribed by specialist doctors and performed at licensed medical facilities," Dr. Nguyen Thanh Khiem informed; he also advised everyone to protect their digestive system by drinking plenty of water, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, getting enough sleep (6-8 hours) at night, and especially limiting alcohol, red meat, fatty foods, and exercising regularly to help maintain a healthy digestive system.
