X-ray images and the foreign object removed from the patient's anus - Photo: Hospital provided.
The patient was admitted with severe lower abdominal pain. Imaging results revealed a large metallic foreign body deeply lodged in the rectum, compressing pelvic organs. This is a dangerous situation that could easily lead to serious complications if not treated promptly.
An interdisciplinary coordination process was immediately activated to find the optimal solution.
The foreign object was an 18cm long, 6cm in diameter pestle. The biggest challenge for the surgical team was that the object was too large for the teenager's anal sphincter, and it also created a "vacuum effect" causing it to be tightly sucked into the intestinal lumen.
The doctors decided to remove the foreign object through the anus to avoid open abdominal surgery.
The anesthesia team performed maximum muscle relaxation. According to Dr. Bui Thanh Hai from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Ha Dong General Hospital, the doctors skillfully maneuvered the instruments to introduce air behind the foreign object to counteract the vacuum suction, and then slowly withdrew the foreign object.
After 45 minutes, the foreign object was safely removed. The injured area suffered only minor abrasions, and the function of the anal sphincter was fully preserved.
Dr. Dinh Hong Kien, head of the emergency surgery department at the hospital, said that the patient's health is now stable, all indicators are normal, and they can be discharged in the next few days.
Doctors warn that teenagers are often curious to explore their bodies but lack knowledge of safety. Inserting foreign objects into the anus can cause intestinal perforation, peritonitis, sepsis, permanent damage to the sphincter muscle, and lead to fecal incontinence.
According to doctors, parents need to pay attention to sex education for their children. If an incident occurs, they should be taken to the hospital immediately and absolutely not attempt to remove the foreign object at home to avoid causing more serious injury.
