On the evening of October 12th, Nguyen Van Quyet bid farewell to the Vietnamese national team after the match against India at Thien Truong Stadium. In the early hours of October 13th, Coach Troussier posted a lengthy message on his personal page to express his respect for his former pupil.
Below is the verbatim statement from the French strategist:
"Respect for Van Quyet."
When I first came to Vietnam in 2018, in the first national league match I watched, Van Quyet was the player who impressed me the most. Even now, in my final days in Vietnam, that impression remains intact. He is a player with excellent tactical intelligence and technical skill to express his game plan. Furthermore, he is always very creative in delivering moments of individual brilliance, going beyond conventional boundaries. That is a valuable quality for an attacking player."
'Class is permanent'
FIFA also paid tribute to Nguyen Van Quyet through the FIFA World Cup Facebook page with a post that read: "Class is permanent." The post included eight photos capturing beautiful moments of the striker in the Vietnamese national team jersey, from his time as a young player under coach Falko Goetz to his time as a key player in major tournaments like the AFF Cup and ASIAD. In the comments section, many Vietnamese football fans also expressed their respect for the player born in 1991.

Mr. Troussier continued: " Perhaps, outsiders sometimes see Van Quyet as a bit selfish, but when I worked with him in the national team, I thought he was a team player. At that time, I was fortunate to have his services before retirement, but it was also regrettable that I couldn't use him at the peak of his career. I explained to Van Quyet that it was difficult for me to include him in the starting lineup due to physical reasons. However, he had to always be ready to play at any time because he possessed rare qualities."

Van Quyet was given the opportunity to play by coach Troussier in the 2-0 victory against the Philippines in the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
I know those words were too blunt and might have hurt Van Quyet. But with his professionalism and experience, he respected my decision in particular and the best interests of the whole team in general. He always gives his all in every training session, advising the younger players to improve themselves, maintain their motivation, and step onto the field with the greatest desire, especially in the match against the Philippines in Manila.
For me, Van Quyet will always be a great player in the history of Vietnamese football, one of the best playmakers the country has ever produced. I am certain that with his qualities, Van Quyet will contribute even more to the future of Vietnamese football. Hopefully, I can see him in a coaching role in the very near future."
