Flowers bloom from the hands of determination

Born with only three fingers on one hand, Nguyen Hang Hai (residing in Binh Duc commune, Tay Ninh province) has never considered it an obstacle that prevents him from moving forward. For him, willpower and determination are the "hands" that help him have a stable life like today.

From his sunny hometown of Nghe An, Mr. Hai went to Ho Chi Minh City to learn how to be a chef. In 2005, he chose Tay Ninh as his place to start his career. "I found the land and people here gentle, the climate favorable, so I decided to stay here, considering this my second hometown" - Mr. Hai shared.

During his years as a chef, Mr. Hai often saw his colleagues meticulously carving flower petals from carrots and squash. These works fascinated him and he wished that one day he could do the same. Many people were skeptical when they heard he was going to learn more about fruit and vegetable carving, but instead of being upset, he chose to prove it with action.

Learning from his teachers, friends and self-studying, in his spare time, Mr. Hai meticulously carved every little detail on the tubers and fruits. At first, the lines were still clumsy. Gradually, the flowers, birds and leaves he created became more and more vivid and delicate.

Mr. Hai confided: “The most memorable memory of my life was participating in a big event about fruit and vegetable sculpture. At first, many people were afraid that I would have difficulty keeping up with the progress and it would affect the overall result, but when the work was completed, everyone was amazed and praised me. Some people even commented that I "have talent because of my disability". At that time, I was very happy, not because I was praised, but because I had proven that I had done very well, my ability had been recognized.”

Currently, Mr. Hai is both the owner of a small restaurant and the head chef at a large restaurant. He also regularly gives cooking instructions and participates in fruit and vegetable carving events. “I think that if I work with all my heart and passion, no disability can stop me from succeeding. I have never been self-conscious about this disability and always have faith in myself,” Mr. Hai shared.

Although Hai lacks fingers, he has more than enough determination to build his life. Every day, his hands still work diligently, a living proof that despite difficulties, with determination and willpower, people can stand firmly on their own two feet./.
