The information about the curriculum that Dieu mentioned during our first course consultation seemed to be left unaddressed. Besides the 30 minutes spent reading the concepts in the syllabus during the first lesson, we received no further basic professional information such as the structure of the skin, areas prone to nerve damage, etc.

The third lesson went by much like the previous two. Using the excuse that we'd have more time to attend class in the coming days, we "begged" Diệu to let us observe the entire third lesson. From the fourth lesson onwards, we'd definitely practice diligently.

And then, the third lesson was still about selecting models, and Dieu was still the one directly holding the needle.

Before the fourth class started, we contacted Dieu and informed her that our schedule for going home had changed. We had to leave earlier than planned and could only attend the final class.

Upon receiving the information, Dieu was not only unsurprised but also replied very casually: "Then come and receive the diploma tomorrow."

On the last day of class, as soon as she entered, before we even had a chance to greet each other, Dieu handed us a framed, laminated certificate.

The certificate states: “Certificate issued to D.TL – for successfully completing the filler and botox course held at Charm Beauty.” The name and signature of Dieu – the training instructor – are in the top left corner of the certificate.

Looking at us, Dieu sighed, "I knew it was graduation day, why dress so simply? I should have dressed up more."

After saying that, Dieu threw us her white blouse and pulled us out to the lobby of the beauty salon to take photos for the certificate presentation.

Diệu wore a pharmacist's uniform, we wore white blouses, and we held flowers and certificates in our hands. This professional image made us feel confident that we had successfully "put on a show."

So, after just three lessons, we received our certificate.

Regarding injection knowledge, we have to admit that we couldn't remember the different types of needles, fillers, Botox, and injection techniques. The only thing that kept echoing in our heads after three lessons was: "Just inject it, it's so easy!"

After handing out the certificates, Dieu didn't let us leave immediately but asked us to stay a little longer to give a touch-up injection to a model who had already received the initial injection. We were still responsible for the cleaning, sterilization, and numbing process.

While waiting for the numbing cream to take effect, we took the opportunity to ask Dieu about techniques for opening a salon and attracting customers.

Since it was the last session, Dieu didn't hide anything from us and "opened up" to share her knowledge. Dieu advised that, for newcomers like us, we should initially only open a spa for hair washing and manicures back home. Injections should only be done secretly.

"When you first open, just do hair washing and manicures. Then, when customers come in, start advising them on filler and Botox injections. Keep the drugs hidden, in case inspectors come and confiscate them," Diệu explained.

Alongside opening the shop, we had to join all the online groups in our hometown, ranging from beauty and food to travel and more . After joining, we had to constantly post promotions and recruit models daily.

In addition to recruiting models and administering injections at the salon, we also have to post advertisements offering injections at private residences. For home injection services, we have to increase the price to cover travel costs.

We told her we intended to open a large spa specializing in filler and botox injections, not just a small shop, and Diệu didn't object. However, Diệu said opening a large spa would cost money to hire licensed doctors.

"If you want to open a large spa, you need a doctor's license, which costs around 35 million VND per license per month. In Vietnam, only a few doctors have the license to inject fillers; not every doctor is allowed to do so. You need to be a specialist in dermatology (level II) who has studied filler injections to practice," Dieu said.

This proves that Dieu had thoroughly researched the regulations for practicing the profession and opening a business, yet still acted completely contrary to them. Ultimately, it all boils down to the enormous profits that this field offers.

Seeing that we were still hesitant about whether to open a large or small shop after "graduating," Dieu advised us again: "When you first open, there won't be many customers, only a few a day, so why bother hiring a doctor? In general, if you're going to do it on a small scale, you should just run it illegally."

Diệu also assured us that the 15 million VND tuition fee we had paid would be easily recouped from the customers.

"Nowadays, there's no job that's as easy to make money as this one. Just a little tapping and you'll have millions of dong. You'll get rich in no time. I was shy back then, so I started learning late. If I had known it was so easy, I would have started sooner," Dieu honestly said.

Regarding importing fillers, Dieu said that all you need to do is message the seller directly on their Facebook page: "Just tell them you're getting them for injections for clients."

It is evident that the buying and selling of these unverified solutions, whose origin and safety have not been verified, is rampant and not bound by any law.

For the last model, Dieu insisted that we hold the needles. To "get it over with quickly," we had no choice but to agree, but only to feel the needles.

Controlling our hands, Dieu pressed the needle into the chin of the girl lying on the injection table: "See? See? Can you feel the needle penetrate the skin and reach the bottom of the bone?" Although we felt nothing, we had to pretend we knew: "Yes, we can!"

That was also our last lesson from the training "school".

After the "fast-track" course, we decided to experience being the "guinea pig," "testing" the injection skills of a trainee who hadn't been practicing for long.

From the Zalo group chat with over 200 members where we previously met "teacher" Dieu, we contacted an account named Lam Thao Nguyen, who regularly posts information recruiting models for home injection services.

In the first message, Nguyen immediately quoted us a price: "For sample injections, it's 800,000 VND/cc; for client injections, it's 1,500,000 VND/cc. High-quality filler, lasting a year and a half."

We asked about the warranty, and Nguyen answered without hesitation: "I guarantee its durability."

After saying that, Nguyen asked for our home address so he could come and ply his trade.

The next day, we picked up Nguyen on time, accompanied by a young man who was Nguyen's friend.

Holding a toolbox the size of an A4 sheet, the young man said he was only "accompanying" his girlfriend to perform injections at home for clients. Despite living all the way in Hoc Mon (Ho Chi Minh City), the couple didn't hesitate to travel over 30km to Binh Duong to provide beauty services for us.

To save time, as soon as he entered the house, Nguyen immediately opened his toolbox and used antiseptic solution to clean our lips and chins. After disinfecting, Nguyen began applying the anesthetic.

While waiting for the numbing cream to take effect, Nguyen asked us if we wanted to be models or clients. If we were models, in addition to paying 800,000 VND per cc of filler, we would have to let Nguyen take our photos and post them everywhere for advertising without our consent. If we were clients, we would have to pay double the amount, and our images would be kept confidential.

We decided to go ahead and use the lip and chin filler injection service. Because, according to Nguyen, the lips and chin require two different types of filler.

During the conversation, Nguyen revealed that he himself had received intensive training in a few weeks. After graduating and practicing the trade for a while, Nguyen is now passing on his skills to many other apprentices.

Just as "teacher" Dieu had warned us earlier, when performing injections for clients, some will request to check the type of filler. In these cases, the injector should feel free to let them check, because "no matter how they check, they won't be able to find out the origin and price."

"That's right," when we expressed our desire to check the type of filler we were about to receive, Nguyen happily offered to show it to us and advised us to take a picture of the barcode to verify.

Upon inspection, the barcode led us to a link in Korean that read, "This is a filler used for dermal fillings." There was absolutely no information about the manufacturer or price.

From this image of the filler, we sent it to the supplier that Dieu had previously recommended. This supplier stated that this type of filler costs 200,000 VND per cc. Therefore, if N. used 2cc for our beauty treatment, she would only spend 400,000 VND but earn 3,000,000 VND.

After 15 minutes of numbing cream, N. asked us to lie down on the sofa to begin the procedure. However, to avoid any complications, we refused the injection at the last minute, still paying the full price for the filler that had just been opened from the box.

Based on our observations while participating in beauty groups on Zalo and Facebook, the kind of "profession" that Nguyen practiced was rampant and open, seemingly without any control from the authorities.

In online groups, pictures of people giving injections at home are constantly being posted. Many people even open spas right in their apartment buildings, receiving dozens of clients for injections every day.

The severe consequences of engaging in this unethical practice are all too clear; however, due to the enormous and easy profits, this illegal path is still chosen by many...

3-in-1 apartment: Living - vaccination - training

Through a Facebook post advertising services, we contacted M., who claimed to have many years of experience in filler and botox injections.

The post didn't include a specific house number, only the street name, city, and M.'s personal phone number. After sending the location via Zalo, M. said it was her spa address and scheduled an appointment for a filler injection service.

Following the GPS, our destination was an apartment building in Thu Dau Mot City (Binh Duong). M. was waiting in the lobby and pressed the elevator button for us to go up to the 12th floor.

The spa, as described by M., was actually a two-bedroom apartment where M. and her family lived. In the living room, besides the sofa set, a lip filler chair was placed nearby. On the chair, another customer was having lip fillers injected by someone wearing a lab coat.

"That's one of my students. She's only had two lessons, but she's very skillful!" M. boasted to us.

Besides receiving clients at her apartment, M. also regularly trains students there. Her prices are much higher than teacher D.'s, with courses costing up to 25 million VND per course.

M. readily admits that he is not a doctor, and that he started out as someone with no prior experience, just like the trainees he is currently teaching.

"The more you practice, the more skilled you become, and once you're skilled, you can open your own business. If you have time, you can take on more trainees like me now," M. said, showing interest in the training course when he saw we were interested.

Having already experienced the practical aspects of "teacher" Dieu's previous course, what happened at M.'s apartment didn't surprise us. From introducing "high-quality" fillers and botox to the "warranty" guarantee, everything was exactly the same.
