How will the integrated English program be implemented in the new school year?

On August 20th, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training issued guidelines on the implementation of the integrated English program (Project 5695) for English, mathematics, natural science , physics, chemistry, and biology subjects starting from the 2024-2025 school year.

Number of lessons and assessment methods in lower secondary school.

Accordingly, lower secondary school students will study English, mathematics, and science subjects from the UK national curriculum for 8 lessons per week, including 3 lessons of English, 2 lessons of mathematics, and 3 lessons of science; the Vietnamese general education program follows the 2018 General Education Program in which the corresponding subjects are taught 1 lesson of English, 2 lessons of mathematics, and 2 lessons of science each week.

Regarding the assessment of secondary school students studying the integrated English program, the Department of Education and Training stipulates that two regular assessment scores for English from the UK national curriculum are converted into two regular assessment scores in the Vietnamese general education program; one regular assessment score for mathematics from the UK national curriculum is converted into one regular assessment score in the Vietnamese general education program; and the regular assessment score for natural science from the UK national curriculum is converted into a regular assessment score in the Vietnamese general education program.

The final grade for English in the UK national curriculum is converted to a final grade in the Vietnamese high school curriculum. The final grade for mathematics and natural sciences is converted to a mid-term grade in the Vietnamese curriculum.

Number of class hours and assessment methods in high school.

For high school students, the national curriculum of England will cover English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology for 15 lessons per week, including 4 lessons of English, 4 lessons of mathematics, and 7 lessons of physics and specialized physics topics, or chemistry and specialized chemistry topics, or biology and specialized biology topics.

In the Vietnamese general education program, following the 2018 General Education Program, students will study the following subjects each week: 1 English lesson for non-specialized classes, 3 English lessons for specialized English classes, 2 math lessons, 1 physics lesson and a physics-related topic, 1 chemistry lesson and a chemistry-related topic, and 1 biology lesson and a biology-related topic.

Regarding the assessment of high school students studying the integrated English program, the Department of Education and Training stipulates that the two regular assessment scores for English and Mathematics in the UK national curriculum are converted into two regular assessment scores in the Vietnamese general education program. For Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, the regular assessment scores from the UK national curriculum are converted into one regular assessment score for Physics, one for Chemistry, and one for Biology in the Vietnamese general education program.

The final grade for English in the UK national curriculum is converted to the final grade in the Vietnamese high school curriculum. The final grade for mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology in the UK national curriculum is converted to the mid-term grade for mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology in the Vietnamese high school curriculum…

Specifically for 12th-grade students, the Department of Education and Training instructs high schools to implement teaching and assessment in English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology according to the regulations above in the first semester. In the second semester, schools will implement teaching time and assessment according to the Vietnamese curriculum.

The Department of Education and Training also requires Vietnamese and foreign teachers in the integrated English program to cooperate to ensure the content and duration of teaching.

For schools implementing a two-session-per-day teaching schedule, additional time can be allocated to teaching and enhancing subjects such as English, mathematics, science, physics, chemistry, and biology. This aims to improve students' learning quality and meet the output standards required by the integrated English program as stipulated in Decision 5695 of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
