Learning is not just for the sake of taking exams.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên21/05/2023

There are effective ways to learn without rote memorization.

I just finished my second semester final exams for 11th grade. As a fairly good student in my class, I feel that my hard work has led to these academic and personal achievements. However, I still feel that if I don't continue to study diligently, actively learn on my own, study harder, be more flexible, and be more creative in order to improve myself, I will fall behind.

I know some students have excellent memories and sharp thinking abilities, so they learn quickly. I remember a classmate of mine in middle school; she was always at the top of her class, and on exams, she often got high scores because she absorbed most of the knowledge in class and understood quickly, applying the teachers' lectures well.

During an English oral exam, the teacher called on my friend unexpectedly, and he managed to get over 80% of the essay correct. Even the teacher was surprised because the essay was quite long. I asked him for his secret, and he explained that he had learned some of the teacher's questions by watching a YouTube program, and he was able to answer the "trick" questions by listening to English music.

The male students in my class are quite sharp and grasp the material immediately in class. For subjects requiring a lot of application, they analyze quickly, but their scores are still limited due to overconfidence and a lack of theoretical study. That's a shame, but their academic ability also makes me wary.

Learning motivation that goes beyond exams and prescribed tests can be a positive way to build genuine learning.

The exam is only a relative assessment.

I personally find it quite difficult to choose a major for university entrance exams because test scores are only relative, and I'm really quite uncertain about it.

Tests are important for consolidating and reinforcing knowledge, but after the test, students often forget quickly and fail to apply what they've learned to real-world situations. This is perhaps because students have few hands-on experiences and only learn theoretically.

I've read that Finland's education system is highly developed, partly because it only has final exams at the end of 12th grade. This doesn't diminish the quality of education. Perhaps the lack of frequent, regular tests relieves pressure on students? Motivation for learning shouldn't be solely focused on exams; these prescribed tests could be a positive way to foster genuine learning.

Stress before the exam

I understand that change is difficult, but at some point we need to absorb the best of global education and make appropriate adjustments. I know that this journey is being undertaken through the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program.

Why are exams only a relative assessment? Because some students are excellent, achieving high scores and being extremely deserving, but exam pressure or avoidable mistakes can lead to lower scores than desired. Or some students who "cram" might get high scores due to luck. Thus, the saying "Talent in learning, fate in exams" still reigns supreme in the 4.0 era.

I wish that classroom lessons and tests would be reduced, and that student evaluation would be limited to grades. Instead, we could organize real-world experiences such as survival training in dangerous situations… "Pressure creates diamonds," but we cannot deny that pressure can lead to negative psychological syndromes. This "illness" stems from the pressure of grades, from parents and teachers placing high expectations, and from being compared to others.

I think families and teachers shouldn't put too much emphasis on grades. Instead, they should encourage their children to try their best, motivate their friends, take them on trips to the beach or picnics, and spend more time getting to know their children better.

Summer is here, and I'm looking forward to learning to swim, reading books, watching movies, developing life skills, and preparing for starting my own business. Please don't rush us into 24/7 extra classes, so that one day, adults and children alike won't regret, "Who took my summer away?"

Let us walk on our own two feet, our own hearts, and our own design approach.

Please share your wish.

We received Thanh Thu's article from one of her teachers, who often contributes educational articles to Thanh Nien Newspaper. This is truly not just Thanh Thu's wish, but also the wish of countless students who are dedicating all their energy to studying for exams, from periodic tests to entrance exams. Every exam is incredibly stressful because everything ultimately boils down to scores. This student's wish for a more relaxed learning experience, where knowledge is accumulated and ingrained not through rote memorization or cramming, deserves serious consideration from education administrators, teachers, schools, and parents. Strong changes should be made to truly help students "make every day at school a joyful day."

In this spirit, Thanh Nien Newspaper hopes to continue receiving articles, shares, and wishes from readers about educational issues as the school year draws to a close and a vibrant summer approaches, with the hope that the next school year will bring about changes.
