The Giang River section through Mon Son commune is 150 m wide, about 700 m long, lying next to limestone mountains, the deepest point is 2.5 m, the shallowest point is about half a meter. There are many types of fish in the river such as silver carp, silver carp, and catfish, with delicious meat. 2024 is the second time the government has organized a fishing competition, within the framework of the Mon Son - Luc Da festival.

According to the rules, each team consists of 4 men and 3 women with registered residence in the village. They must prepare 4 fishing nets, a scoop, a net and a plastic bucket, and can also bring a fish basket or diving goggles. The fish used to calculate the results must be caught by the teams in the Giang River area designated by the authorities. Anyone who brings fish from outside will be considered a violator and disqualified.

At 8:30 a.m., after the Organizing Committee gave the signal over the loudspeaker, 12 teams immediately rowed their boats to the middle of the Giang River, threw their 3-meter wide, 2.8-meter long nets into the water. After about 5-10 minutes, 2-3 members dived to the bottom to check if there were any fish caught in the net to come up with a plan to catch them. Some other teams had 5-7 people standing on the boat working together to collect the nets, remove the fish stuck in the nets and put them in plastic buckets.

Mr. Ha Van Mai, 56 years old, Tan Son team, said that a few days before the competition, he and his team members went to the local dams to practice casting nets. There are fish in Giang river that weigh 6-8 kg, many species such as black carp weigh 15-20 kg. When the fish are caught in the net, if the technique is not correct, the risk of them escaping is very high, so it is necessary to discuss to coordinate smoothly during the competition.

"The number of fish this year is the same as last year, however the large sizes have gradually decreased. In the previous competition, the team caught many grass carp weighing 6-8 kg, this year the biggest fish was only 4 kg, the rest were from 800g to more than 2 kg," said Mr. Mai.

At 9:30 a.m., the competition ended, and the teams brought their buckets of fish to the Organizing Committee for weighing. As a result, the Bac Son team won first prize by catching more than 17 kg of fish, receiving 400,000 VND, and also received an additional 100,000 VND for catching the largest grass carp weighing 4 kg. The two teams Tan Son and Lang Yen caught 14-15 kg, coming in third and second respectively, receiving 200,000-300,000 VND. The above fish will be given to the teams to divide as food.

Mr. Luong Van Hoa, Chairman of Mon Son commune, said that the monetary reward is only for encouragement, the main purpose is to want people and tourists participating in the Mon Son - Luc Da festival to raise awareness of protecting the ecological environment and aquatic resources in the area.

From 10 to 12 o'clock, thousands of people participating in the festival are allowed to use nets, casters, and plastic buckets to go down to Giang River to catch fish, each person catching an average of 1-2 kg. After 12 o'clock, the Organizing Committee used loudspeakers to ask everyone to go ashore and put up a no fishing sign. In the coming time, the government will release hundreds of tons of fish fry into the river, and send guards to monitor them every day to serve the next festival season.

"The fish here is very delicious. When I brought it to shore, some people asked to buy it right away, but I didn't sell it. I brought it home to buy some more pickles to cook for my family and invite friends to enjoy. Festivals like this need to be maintained and promoted, because participating will increase community solidarity," said Mr. Vi Van Luong, 56 years old, resident of Mon Son commune.
