(CLO) According to data from the University of Florida's Elections Research Laboratory, American voters appear to be very supportive of early voting.
Michael McDonald, the political science professor who led the project, said data compiled by his six research labs in Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Michigan, North Carolina, and Virginia showed that more than 62 million U.S. citizens had voted in 2024 — nearly 40% of the total votes cast in 2020.
Similar percentages have been reported in several battleground states, including North Carolina and Georgia, where 45% of registered voters have cast ballots in what is still a very close presidential race.

Observers believe that strong voter sentiment and changes to early voting regulations since 2020 have fueled this trend.
"Voters are involved on both sides," Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Thursday on CNN. "What we just want to do is ensure that we have a fair, honest, and accurate process, and that's what we do."
Observers have noted that early voting data, including voter turnout by gender, is highly difficult to interpret – for example, approximately 55% of women have voted compared to 45% of men.
