To get to the island, visitors can travel by helicopter.

Formed from volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, Aogashima possesses a unique terrain with steep cliffs and a giant crater located right in the middle of the island.

Today, the volcano is still active, making Aogashima one of Japan’s active volcanoes. The last eruption in 1780 killed more than half of the island’s population, and it took more than 50 years for people to return.

Getting to Aogashima is not easy. Visitors must travel a long way, combining planes and ships, or choose to travel by helicopter.

However, due to harsh weather conditions, the number of flights to the island is very limited. Therefore, Aogashima still retains its inherent wildness and peace.

Life on Aogashima Island is slow and simple. The people here mainly make a living from farming, fishing and tourism. Despite the harsh living conditions, the Aogashima community is united and supportive of each other. They have built a full life with schools, hospitals, post offices and even small restaurants to serve tourists.

The residents are considered the bravest people because they live on the crater of an active volcano.

One of the special features of Aogashima is its unique traditional culture. The people here still preserve ancient customs, such as seasonal festivals and rain-praying rituals.

In particular, Aochu wine, a traditional liquor made from sweet potatoes and wheat, is a famous product of the island. The unique flavor of Aochu has captivated many tourists.

For those who love to explore and want to enjoy a space isolated from the surrounding world , Aogashima is definitely an ideal destination. And certainly, visitors need to learn and prepare carefully before coming here, because life on the island is quite simple and does not have many modern amenities.
