Hong Kong's Secretary for Trade and Economic Development, Chiu Ying-hwa, said that authorities are still actively promoting Vietnam's accession to RCEP.

The Chinese government and ASEAN member states all support Hong Kong's accession to this agreement.

However, since RCEP has only just officially come into full effect (June 2nd), priority needs to be given to handling the relevant matters first, and then Hong Kong's application will be considered for approval.

All 15 RCEP member countries are important trading partners of Hong Kong. Therefore, during his recent visit to Japan, Chief Executive Chiu Ying-hua reiterated the Special Administrative Region's desire to join RCEP as soon as possible.

RCEP was signed by leaders of 15 Asia-Pacific countries in November 2020.

The agreement officially came into effect on January 1, 2022, after being ratified by seven Southeast Asian countries and Australia, China, Japan, and New Zealand.
