Vinh Linh District is expanding the model of model gardens.

Given the benefits of building model gardens, especially contributing to beautifying the rural landscape and utilizing land resources to improve the economic efficiency of gardens in each family, the movement to build model gardens in new rural areas has been actively implemented by localities in Vinh Linh district in recent years, resulting in an increasing number of model gardens meeting the standards.

The family of Ms. Hoang Thi Phuong Hoa, in Quang Xa village, Vinh Lam commune, started building a model garden nearly 5 years ago. Previously, on the same garden area of ​​over 700 m2, Ms. Hoa's family still engaged in farming and livestock raising, but without systematic investment or focus on any particular crops or livestock. The agricultural products produced mainly served the family's daily needs.

Later, in response to the movement to build model gardens in new rural areas, Ms. Hoa's household began to renovate and rearrange the garden, then gradually learned about and specialized in growing fruit trees and raising livestock organically.

Ms. Hoa's garden currently has a well-designed and aesthetically pleasing layout, divided into three sections: the path leading to the house and the area in front of the house, where various ornamental and shade trees are planted and displayed; the two sides of the house are fruit orchards; and the area behind the house is used for livestock pens, ensuring hygiene.

Ms. Hoa shared: “Since building the model garden, my family has reorganized the garden to be neat and clean, and installed an electricity and irrigation system. Thanks to this, production in the garden has become more efficient. In recent years, the garden has had seasonal products for sale, such as green pomelo, longan, guava, chicken eggs, and chicken meat... By utilizing our own garden, my family earns an additional 50 million VND per year, and more importantly, we have a more spacious, clean, and beautiful living environment.”

To develop model gardens in the new rural areas, each locality in Vinh Linh district has launched a widespread emulation movement, strengthening propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage officials and people to voluntarily participate in improving and enhancing the economic efficiency of their gardens.

In addition, each local association is directed to survey and select at least one farmer household with a strong commitment to building a model new rural garden, and to compile a list to propose to the District People's Committee for training and guidance on the implementation process. Based on the actual conditions of their gardens and the planned development, these households will gradually complete the planned items.

Accordingly, model gardens for the new rural areas will be evaluated based on 5 criteria with 9 indicators, including: planning and implementation of planning; application of scientific and technological advancements; products from the garden; environmental landscape; and income. During the process of people responding to and implementing the construction of model gardens, Vinh Linh district directed all levels, sectors, and localities to regularly inspect and promptly assist with a portion of the seeds and funding so that each household could invest in a garden on a larger scale.

Based on the dossiers submitted by the People's Committees of the communes, the Vinh Linh District Model Garden Appraisal Council conducted on-site assessments of the level of achievement of each model garden criterion according to Decision No. 2054/QD-UBND dated August 8, 2022, of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee on the promulgation of the set of criteria for building model gardens in new rural areas in the province for the period 2022-2025. Model gardens that meet the standards will receive awards from the district to the village level. This will create further motivation and encourage people to continue developing model gardens.

As a result, in Vinh Linh district, many households have established gardens with areas of 1,000m2 or more, ensuring harmony between landscape and environment and initially bringing economic benefits. To date, Vinh Linh district has 59 villages that meet the standards of model new rural areas; 70 household gardens have been recognized as meeting the standards of model gardens according to the set of criteria for building model rural gardens in the 2022-2025 period, located in the communes of: Kim Thach, Hien Thanh, Trung Nam, Vinh Hoa, Vinh Giang, Vinh Chap, Vinh Long, Vinh Tu, Vinh Thai, Vinh Lam, Vinh Thuy, and Vinh Son.

Speaking about the future development direction of model gardens in Vinh Linh district, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Vinh Linh district, Diep Hong Cuong, added: “Continuing to implement the contents of the new rural development program, the levels, sectors, and localities of Vinh Linh district will actively encourage households with gardens that have met the standards to maintain and further develop their gardens. This will serve as a standard for surrounding households to learn from and replicate. We strive for each village to have not just one model garden, but two, three, or even more model gardens as per the general regulations.”

Building, maintaining, and expanding model gardens is proving effective in rural areas of Vinh Linh district. In particular, developing garden-based economic activities while protecting the environment within each household contributes to preserving the landscape and living space of new rural villages.
