Indonesia currently holds its highest rice reserves in history, as the country pushes forward with a strategy of food self-sufficiency and strengthening its capacity to stabilize the domestic market.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Jakarta, Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, Director General of the Indonesian National Logistics Agency (Bulog), stated on May 25 that the national rice reserves have now reached approximately 5.36 million tons – the highest level ever recorded in this Southeast Asian country.
Mr. Ramdhani stated that Bulog's storage capacity has now been expanded to approximately 6.2 million tons and will continue to increase in the near future to meet the growing domestic rice production.
He emphasized: "By purchasing domestic production, we not only ensure the national rice supply but also contribute to maintaining price stability for both farmers and consumers."
According to Bulog, the agency has purchased approximately 2.8 million tons of rice out of its 2026 target of 4 million tons. This achievement reflects Indonesia's efforts to strengthen its strategic reserves while supporting domestic farmers' output.
Indonesian officials say Bulog currently operates a large-scale infrastructure network nationwide, including warehousing systems, logistics networks, and post-harvest rice processing facilities.
Mr. Ramdhani noted that achieving long-term food self-sufficiency depends not only on production volume but also requires the ability to absorb agricultural products, maintain strategic reserves, upgrade post-harvest infrastructure, and ensure food is readily available at reasonable prices.
He stated, "Sustainable food security requires interdisciplinary collaboration, in which universities play a crucial role as centers for research, innovation, and the development of new ideas."
Indonesia has recently been consistently promoting policies to increase agricultural production and strengthen food security, amidst the ongoing risks of supply disruptions and global food price fluctuations in many countries.
