iOS 18 has the potential to be the “biggest” software update in iPhone history, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
"According to insiders, the new operating system is being viewed as one of the biggest, if not the biggest, iOS updates in Apple's history," Gurman wrote.
Mark Gurman said he will reveal more details about specific features and changes coming to iOS 18 in the future. But for now, the two most prominent new features that are likely to appear in the upcoming iOS 18 update are RCS support and a smarter Siri.
iOS 18 is expected to be introduced at WWDC event next June |
RCS Support
In November 2023, Apple announced that it would support the RCS cross-platform messaging standard in the iPhone messaging app from late 2024. So based on this time frame, it is likely that this will be a new feature integrated into iOS 18.
RCS support brings a number of improvements to the current messaging experience between iPhone and Android devices, including higher resolution photos and videos, voice messages, read receipts, typing indicators, Wi-Fi messaging, improved group chats, and the ability for iPhone users to leave conversations with Android users, all of which are more secure than SMS.
These features are already available when messaging between iPhones via iMessage, as well as between third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Siri gets smarter
Gurman predicts that the iOS 18 update will include generative AI technology that will improve the way Siri and messaging apps answer questions and complete sentences. The journalist says Apple is also exploring generative AI features for other apps on its platforms, such as Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and Xcode.
The Information reports that Apple is planning to integrate a large language model into Siri so users can automatically complete complex tasks. The feature is expected to be released in a 2024 iPhone update, i.e. iOS 18.
