After years of minimal design changes to the iPhone, Apple has now embarked on an ambitious three-year overhaul of its most important phone line.
Starting with the iPhone 17 Pro Max, featuring a larger rear camera module and a new aluminum frame, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be a crucial stepping stone before Apple releases its true "strategic weapon": the iPhone 20 Pro Max in 2027, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the first iPhone. It's highly likely Apple will skip the iPhone 19 name, just as it skipped the iPhone 9.

According to new information and renders from the well-known source Jon Prosser, the iPhone 20 Pro Max could be the most audacious smartphone Apple has ever created.
The display offers a completely bezel-less screen, eliminating any distracting details.
Apple's biggest ambition with the iPhone 20 Pro Max is to create a device that is almost entirely screen. No bezels in the traditional sense, no Dynamic Island, and no punch-holes in the display.

Unlike older curved-screen phone models like Samsung's Galaxy Edge series, Apple reportedly doesn't want to create a distorted view of content on the sides.
Instead, the screen will curve gently on all four edges and blend seamlessly into the frame in a more natural way.
Users still get the feeling of using a nearly flat screen, but at the same time, the display bezels have almost completely disappeared.
Most notably, Dynamic Island will also be removed. Apple isn't replacing it with a "punch-hole" camera like many Android manufacturers are doing, but instead wants the entire Face ID sensor and selfie camera to be completely hidden under the screen.
If successful, this would be the biggest breakthrough for smartphones in years: bringing phone screens back to their original purpose, a seamless and distraction-free display space.
According to Prosser's renders, the iPhone 20 Pro Max will also abandon the current flat-edged design. Instead, softly curved edges will support the screen, making the device look more like a piece of tech jewelry than a regular phone.
"Liquid Glass Display" and the ambition to redefine the display experience.
Apple is reportedly developing a brand-new anti-reflective coating for the iPhone 20 Pro Max's display. This technology promises significantly better outdoor visibility and a more premium feel during use.

Some sources suggest that Apple may call this new display technology "Liquid Glass Display".
The name is also very fitting for the Liquid Glass interface that the company has been pursuing on iOS in recent years.
In addition to focusing on displays, Apple is also reportedly developing a completely new type of battery to increase capacity without expanding the battery size.
However, this technology will not be the silicon-carbon battery that is currently popular in many Chinese smartphones.
Apple's ambitions go even further. Several reports reveal that the company wants to make the iPhone 20 Pro Max a truly "unibody" device: no physical buttons, no external speaker grille, and almost every component hidden to create an absolutely seamless design.
The likelihood of that happening as early as 2027 is still quite low, but it's clear Apple is aiming for a future where smartphones become a single, solid piece of glass.
There are still many technical challenges that are difficult to overcome.
Although the plan sounds very appealing, Apple is facing considerable difficulties in realizing that ambition.
Initially, the company wanted to integrate Face ID under the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max to prepare users for a truly full-screen design. However, this is not yet certain to become a reality.

According to numerous reports, the under-display Face ID sensors are still slow and inaccurate.
This is something Apple would find hard to accept, especially for a feature that has been considered iconic on the iPhone for many years.
If Apple fails to perfect this technology in time, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may only be a relatively unremarkable upgrade and not significant enough to make a big difference.
Not only is the iPhone 18 Pro Max facing difficulties, but even the iPhone 20 Pro Max project is encountering numerous technical challenges.
Apple is reportedly not achieving the display quality expected for its "absolutely bezel-less" screen design.
The new screen structure will likely still cause slight distortion at the edges, although the level will not be too serious.
Additionally, this design may also cause the screen brightness to be somewhat affected in certain areas.
In other words, Apple's three-year iPhone overhaul plan isn't going as perfectly as the company hoped. The iPhone 18 Pro Max may only serve as a "stepping stone" before Apple moves on to its true iPhone in 2027.

Despite numerous obstacles, the iPhone 20 Pro Max remains a project that has generated considerable excitement in the tech world. After years of smartphone design nearing saturation, Apple appears to be preparing for the next display revolution.
