This move by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was in retaliation for the US military attack on the Gambian-flagged bulk carrier Lian Star en route to Iran in the Sea of Oman, and also described the attacked ship as belonging to "the US-Israeli enemy."
On the same day, Iraqi officials confirmed that two explosions had struck a cargo ship in the Persian Gulf, about 40 nautical miles southeast of Iraq's Umm Qasr port, one of which was caused by a drone.
Earlier, the UK Maritime Trade Authority (UKMTO) stated that the ship's starboard side had been struck by a flying object, causing a large explosion.
According to initial assessments from Iraqi officials, the second explosion occurred shortly afterward and was caused by a drone. The fire on the ship has now been brought under control.
"While we were assessing the damage from the initial explosion, a drone appeared on the scene, followed shortly by a large explosion that set the ship on fire," an Iraqi maritime patrol member told Reuters.
The US fired Hellfire missiles at an Iranian ship.
Earlier this weekend, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its forces had "neutralized" a Gambian-flagged vessel attempting to divert to an Iranian port.
Posting on social media platform X, CENTCOM stated that its forces "observed the M/V Lian Star transiting international waters toward an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman, and issued more than 20 warnings simultaneously, informing the vessel that it was violating the U.S. blockade."
A U.S. aircraft neutralized the vessel by firing a Hellfire missile at the ship's engine room after the Lian Star's crew failed to comply with instructions. The ship is no longer en route to Iran.
Recently, the US War Department attacked Iranian radar and drone bases in Goruk and on Qeshm Island, calling it "self-defense attacks." Tehran retaliated by launching missiles and drones at Kuwait, plunging the Gulf nation into the center of the conflict.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Parliament and head of Iran's negotiating delegation, accused the US of violating the ceasefire with Iran, including continuing its blockade of Iranian ports and failing to restrain its ally Israel from escalating attacks in Lebanon.
Ghalibaf wrote in an X post: “The Israeli naval blockade and escalating war crimes in Lebanon are clear evidence that the U.S. is not complying with the ceasefire. Every option has its price, and the bill is due. Things will eventually fall into place.”
Iran claims control of the Strait of Hormuz along with Oman.
On Monday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi declared that Iran and Oman are the only two countries with the right to "exercise sovereignty" in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to IRIB television, Gharibabadi said Iran had implemented a new procedure to "control traffic and navigation" in the waterway, but the agreement was coordinated with Oman.
He said Iran had urged Oman "not to succumb to" threats from the US, after Trump declared he would "blow up" the country if it did not "act like everyone else" regarding the strait.
Iranian state media quoted a statement from the supreme command emphasizing: "The administration of the Strait of Hormuz is carried out with full authority by the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran."
According to the newly reaffirmed regulations, all vessels, including commercial ships and oil tankers, are required to travel along designated routes. Specifically, these vessels must obtain permission and approval from the IRGC before passing through the strait. Iran warns that any deliberate violation will seriously endanger the maritime safety of the vessel itself.
Not stopping at civilian means, the Tehran government also sent a message to foreign military forces operating in the region, especially the US military and its allies.
The Khatam al-Anbiya command declared that any interference with Iran's maritime management or obstruction of ship movement in the Strait of Hormuz would immediately trigger a military response from Tehran. This move comes as the US maritime blockade of Iranian ports continues to exert significant pressure on the Persian Gulf region.
