On November 22, the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed an agreement to release several hostages being held by Hamas forces in the Gaza Strip. The agreement was approved by a majority vote at a cabinet meeting.
The Israeli Prime Minister's office said the agreement would allow for the release of 50 women and children within four days, during which time a ceasefire would also be implemented. Israel also released 150 Palestinian prisoners. The hostages are expected to be released within 24 hours of the agreement's announcement. The first hostages could be released tomorrow morning, November 23rd.
According to Israel, Hamas has been holding approximately 240 hostages since the conflict erupted on October 7th. Hamas also confirmed the four-day humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The ceasefire could be extended if more hostages are released. According to Israel's proposal, the ceasefire would be extended by one day for every 10 hostages released. The ceasefire agreement also allows hundreds of trucks carrying humanitarian aid, medicine, and fuel into the Gaza Strip.
The agreement was reached after weeks of tense negotiations between Israel, Hamas, and the United States, with Qatar playing a key mediating role. Qatar handed over the draft hostage agreement to Israel on November 21.
