A host of hit-making experts are returning to the Vietnamese music scene at the beginning of the year.
Right from the beginning of 2024, the Vietnamese music market became vibrant with the release of a series of new musical products. While in January, music videos with New Year-welcoming themes dominated the charts, in February and March, products with diverse content and styles were introduced to the public.
On February 6th, Duc Phuc released the MV " Di Chua Cau Duyen " (Going to the Temple to Pray for Love) - the fourth music product the male singer has released on Valentine's Day, after "Hon Ca Yeu" ( More Than Love ) (2020), "Ngay Dau Tien" ( First Day ) (2022) and "Em Dong Y - I Do" (I Do) (2023). Shortly after, the famous couple of the Vietnamese music scene, BigDaddy & Emily, also released their comeback MV titled "Yeu Nam ". At the end of the month, Jack introduced the MV "Thien Ly Oi" to the public. In this product, he filmed... Returning to his musical forte, which is lyrical music with a touch of folk influence, instead of the breakthrough he achieved with "From Where I Was Born" previously.

March brought the return of many big names, with Son Tung M-TP releasing the music video "Our Future Selves ." This is a follow-up to " Our Present Selves," the singer's hit from 2020. Meanwhile, Den Vau, one of the most popular rappers at the moment, also released the music video "Music of the Forest ," which debuted on March 4th. This work carries a message about nature and the harmony between humans and the mountains and forests.
Earlier, on the evening of March 1st, Vu Cat Tuong released the music video for "Tung La, " a pop song mixed with bossa nova, adding a relaxing and gentle feel for listeners. Bich Phuong returned to the music scene after a two-year hiatus with her new song " Nang Chen Tieu Sau, " released on March 8th.
Another notable figure returning to the music scene at the beginning of the year is Suboi with "Dau Thien Ha" (The Daughter-in-Law of the World). This new song addresses the story of women who become daughters-in-law, bearing too many responsibilities and pressures on their shoulders, while still having to "be beautiful, capable, elegant," gentle, and pleasing to everyone.
Less creative, more controversial.
Upon its release, Sơn Tùng M-TP's music video "Chúng ta của tương lai" (Our Future Selves ) immediately topped the YouTube Trending charts. This achievement wasn't entirely unexpected given his large fanbase; however, considering the broader audience, the song didn't leave a particularly strong impression.

According to revelations, the song, composed by Son Tung M-TP five years ago, generally has a beautiful melody but lacks a standout feature. Compared to the "hits" that created the explosion of the singer from Thai Binh many years ago, the noteworthy aspect of this product is perhaps Son Tung's media stunt, when his rumored girlfriend Hai Tu suddenly unfollowed his social media account, and then both of them posted information about the new product. Instead of discussing the quality of the music, many people see this as Son Tung publicly revealing his relationship after years of complete silence from the audience.
Meanwhile, returning after two years, Bich Phuong disappointed with "Nang Chen Tieu Sau" (Raising a Cup to Dispel Sorrow ). The song, composed by Tang Duy Tan, was not much different from his previous hit, "Cat Doi Noi Sau" (Cutting in Two Sorrow) , in both rhythm and lyrical development. Duc Phuc's " Di Chua Cau Duyen" (Going to the Temple to Pray for Love) also lacked appeal, making it significantly less popular than his previous Valentine's Day hits.
Among the new faces, Quang Hung MasterD is the luckiest case, as his music video "Tidal Wave" was well-received by listeners thanks to its catchy melody and easy-to-remember lyrics. The product also helped him reach a wider Vietnamese audience, after many years of being popular only among listeners in Thailand.
While not scoring highly in terms of professional merit, the music videos released at the beginning of the year share a commonality: they all sparked controversy, mostly related to personal lives. Similarly, Sơn Tùng M-TP's "Chúng ta của tương lai" (Our Future) and Bích Phương's music videos attracted attention due to rumors of a romantic relationship with Tăng Duy Tân, the songwriter behind her song. Meanwhile, Cát Tường hinted at a romance with a female backup dancer in her song "Từng là" (Once Was), releasing intimate photos but not confirming the dating rumors.
On another note, Jack's music video "Thien Ly Oi" is embroiled in copyright controversy, with musician/streamer ViruSs claiming that the beat for the song was produced collaboratively by him and Jack. According to ViruSs, the singer reused a section of the music without permission. "I'm surprised because if Jack took this demo and remixed it, he should have told me, but he didn't say anything. This song (Thien Ly Oi) is similar to my demo. I'm very shocked," streamer ViruSs expressed his frustration.
Following ViruSs's accusation, Jack claimed that the streamer was using his name to gain views. At the same time, the singer denied the accusation of using beats without permission and expressed a desire to work directly with the streamer.
The release of dozens of music videos at the beginning of the year shows that competition in the Vietnamese music industry is becoming increasingly fierce. This also poses a challenge for artists to constantly innovate and reinvent themselves in music.
