Mathieu works at a sporting goods store so he doesn't feel alienated from the community. |
Images of Mathieu wearing an Intersport uniform and working at a branch between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille surprised fans. Speaking to beIN Sports , Mathieu explained that his job at the store wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. He was embroiled in a lawsuit and facing difficulties after retiring from football.
"I work at Intersport because something is happening that's causing me a lot of problems. I won't do this job forever, but I'm doing it to have a life that integrates with society," he said.
The former French international also revealed that he had struggled with depression and has not fully recovered. A former teammate, Loic Loval-Landre, helped him find this job so he could go out, socialize, and avoid staying home for too long.
Mathieu is a former Champions League winner with Barcelona. During his time with "Blaugrana," he won two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and the 2014/15 Champions League under Luis Enrique. Mathieu came on as a substitute in the 3-1 final victory against Juventus in 2015.
Previously, the former French international made 177 appearances for Valencia and was highly regarded for his experience and versatility, being able to play both center-back and left-back. His salary at Barca was once around £100,000 per week.
Mathieu retired in 2020 after a serious knee injury while playing for Sporting Lisbon. From the pinnacle of European football to his personal life, Mathieu's story shows that not every champion has an easy journey after the game.
