Juventus gives Inter an early chance to win the championship

VnExpressVnExpress11/03/2024

Italy Held to a 2-2 draw by Atalanta in round 28, Juventus is 17 points behind leader Inter, with little chance of winning the Serie A championship this season.

The home advantage was not enough for Juventus to overwhelm Atalanta. The "Old Lady" had 51% possession and five shots on goal, while their opponents had 49% possession and three shots. In a lurking game, Teun Koopmeiners took advantage of a free kick in the 35th minute, firing into the top corner to open the scoring for Atalanta.

After conceding the first goal, Juventus played with more concentration. Those changes helped the home team turn the situation around early in the second half. Andrea Cambiaso shot low past goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi to equalize in the 66th minute. Four minutes later, Arkadiusz Milik's shot hit a defender and changed direction into the goal, making the score 2-1.

However, defensive errors once again cost Juventus. In the 75th minute, after a through ball from Berat Djimsiti, Koopmeiners comfortably escaped into the penalty area and shot diagonally to equalize 2-2.

The draw with Atalanta cost Juventus second place in Serie A. The Old Lady dropped to third with 58 points, one point behind AC Milan. In round 28, Christian Pulisic scored to help AC Milan beat Empoli 1-0.

Juventus' failure to win in round 28 also gave Inter the chance to win the championship early. The leading team currently has 75 points, 16 points more than AC Milan and 17 points more than Juventus. Coach Simone Inzaghi's team only needs to win five of the remaining 10 matches to win the championship.

In the late match on the evening of March 10, Roma drew 2-2 at Fiorentina. Luca Ranieri's header in the 18th minute and Rolando Mandragora's volley gave Fiorentina the lead twice, while Houssem Aouar's header in the 58th minute reduced the deficit for the visitors.

Fiorentina could have won if Cristiano Biraghi had not missed a penalty in the 80th minute. After escaping danger, Roma surprisingly equalized in the 90+5 minute. Center-back Diego Llorente became the hero for the away team when he volleyed into the top corner a minute before the referee ended the match.

The draw with Fiorentina helped Roma consolidate their fifth place in Serie A with 48 points. Atalanta are right behind them with 47 points, while former champions Napoli are seventh with 44 points and Fiorentina are eighth with 43 points. Under the format for next season's Champions League, the top two countries in the UEFA group will be allowed to send five teams. Italy leads the group, making fifth place in Serie A a "hot target".

After replacing coach Jose Mourinho with Daniele De Rossi on January 16, Roma have only lost one of 11 matches in all competitions, a 2-4 defeat to Inter in round 24 of Serie A.
