The appearance of the "coastal Highway 1"

The bridge in Hamlet 3, spanning the Co Co River (in Dien Ngoc ward, Dien Ban town), has a cross-section with 4 lanes for motor vehicles and grade-separated pedestrian walkways on both sides.

The bridge features two gently sloping V-shaped main arches, symbolizing a powerful crane soaring towards the East Sea, elegant yet modern. Below the main bridge, a pedestrian bridge has been constructed to connect to the scenic riverside route along the Co Co River.

After two years of construction, the Thon 3 bridge was officially opened to traffic at the end of April. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam - Director of the Quang Nam Provincial Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works (the investor) said that this is a project with a new architecture and structure in Vietnam, therefore there were many challenges during the construction process.

The Thon 3 Bridge is not only sturdy but also beautifully designed, and will be a highlight on the Co Co River waterway tourism route and the urban areas that will be built along both banks of the river. Located on the northern ring road, the bridge and connecting roads will transform the appearance of the young city of Dien Ban and the ancient city of Hoi An.

The Quang Nam province's integrated adaptive development project will implement dredging of the Truong Giang River; a flood control complex in Tam Ky City; and the construction of bridges across the Truong Giang River. The total investment is over 2,722 billion VND; of which approximately 1,838.502 billion VND is ODA loan from the World Bank (WB); and approximately 884.1 billion VND is counterpart funding.

The Quang Nam Provincial Project Management Board for the construction of transportation infrastructure projects (the investor) is coordinating with the Ministry of Finance to work with the World Bank towards signing a loan agreement as stipulated. Following this, the investor will proceed with the next steps.

In conjunction with the Thon 3 Bridge, another large-scale, four-lane bridge under construction by Da Nang City is the Quang Da Bridge, spanning the Yen River. This bridge connects the northern ring road's end point in Dien Tien commune (Dien Ban district) with National Highway 14B, specifically the section passing through Hoa Khuong commune (Hoa Vang district, Da Nang City). Thus, the northern ring road not only connects the region internally but also serves as a strategic external transportation artery linking Da Nang City to the northwest.

Spanning the Co Co River, the Nguyen Duy Hieu Bridge, which has been put into operation, also boasts beautiful architecture. The Nghia Tu and Phuoc Trach bridges are currently under construction or will be invested in. The De Vong Bridge, or Cua Dai Bridge (spanning the Thu Bon River), also plays a role in connecting the coastal road bordering Da Nang City to access Chu Lai Airport, creating a "coastal National Highway 1".

Key investment areas

Building a synchronous infrastructure system is one of the three strategic breakthroughs of the Party and State for the period 2021-2025 and is being implemented by the Provincial Party Committee according to Conclusion No. 29 dated May 4, 2021.

Over the years, Quang Nam has prioritized resources for the development of a comprehensive infrastructure, including connecting transportation routes and urban areas. As a result, the transportation infrastructure has developed strongly and comprehensively, basically meeting the needs for travel and trade.

In implementing the Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the construction of bridges to connect the road infrastructure is a priority task.

In the eastern region, the new bridges are only partially constructed, belonging to the DT619 route (Vo Chi Cong road) from the intersection with National Highway 40B, in Tam Ky City, to the intersection with the DT620 route and the road to Chu Lai Airport (Nui Thanh).

As part of the project to complete Road 129 - Vo Chi Cong, the remaining sections of these six bridges (Diem Tra Bridge, Tam Tien Bridge, Tam Hiep Bridge, An Tan 2 Bridge, Tam Nghia Bridge, and Tam Quang Bridge) are being constructed to facilitate traffic flow, which is also being widened according to the plan. Connecting to the strategic Vo Chi Cong axis, many horizontal routes from national highways to provincial roads are being expanded.

On March 14, 2024, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 574 approving the Quang Nam Province Integrated Adaptation Development Project. The investment objective is to enhance access to adaptation infrastructure services and improve the capacity for planning and managing adaptation to natural disaster risks in the project implementation areas.
Notably, the Yangtze River will have six new bridges built according to the plan, and one existing bridge will be replaced.

These include Binh Duong Bridge, Hung My Bridge, Binh Nam Bridge, Tinh Thuy Bridge, Tam Thanh Bridge, and Tam Tien Bridge. All of these bridges are located on routes that connect directly or indirectly to Vo Chi Cong Road. Some bridges also serve as "intermediate" links to National Highway 1 or National Highway 40B.

It can be envisioned that the bridges currently under construction and those planned for the future across the rivers will form a comprehensive and seamless road transport system connecting the East, West, South, and North, linking with neighboring provinces and cities to create a "new lifeline" to meet development needs.
