Discover Phu Quy Island

Việt NamViệt Nam17/02/2025

Phu Quy, also known as Thu Island, is a small island located about 120 km southeast of Phan Thiet City (Binh Thuan province). Besides the main island, Phu Quy is surrounded by Hon Da Cao, Hon Do, Hon Tranh, and Hon Hai. Although Phu Quy Island covers just over 18 square kilometers, it offers plenty of beautiful scenery, attractions, and experiences for visitors to explore over several days.

The island enjoys a pleasant, cool climate year-round. The best time to explore Phu Quy Island is from December to June, as the typhoon season usually falls between September and November. During spring and summer, the sea is calm, clear, and the wind is gentle, making it easy to travel to the smaller islands. However, occasional rough seas are possible, so visitors should check the weather forecast beforehand. Typically, exploring the entire island district takes 3-4 days. If you don't want to take a boat to the smaller islands, you can opt for a 3-day, 2-night trip, including 2 days for travel and 1 day for exploring the main island.

Triều Dương Bay

Following the main road around the island, the first destination is Trieu Duong Bay, a small beach with calm, blue water and a long stretch of fine sand. In the afternoons, it's crowded with locals swimming. Next, the sovereignty flagpole is a place where almost every visitor to the island checks in.

Ganh Hang

Located about 650m from Bai Nho beach, Ganh Hang is a large, vertical cliff right by the sea. Seawater overflows, creating a natural "Blissful Stream" and "Infinity Pool," attracting many tourists for swimming. You should bring sturdy hiking shoes for safety. When taking photos, be careful not to go too close to the edge of the "infinity pool" to avoid being pulled out to sea by the waves, and it's best to go with a local guide.

Sand Peak

Cao Cat Peak, located in the north of Phu Quy Island, is one of the highest mountains on the island, rising 106 meters above sea level. Here, you'll find uniquely shaped cliffs with horizontal grooves formed by weathering, often compared to the Grand Canyon in the United States. On your way to the summit of Cao Cat, you can visit Linh Son Pagoda.

Van An Thanh Whale Temple

In 1941, the carcass of a whale washed ashore on Phu Quy Island. Locals discovered it and gave it a solemn burial. While alive, this whale could have been over 20 meters long, and you can see its skeleton when you visit Van An Thanh. Here, you will hear locals recount stories of whales helping ships during storms at sea.

Phu Quy Lighthouse

The lighthouse is located on Mount Cam, more than 100 meters above sea level. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the picturesque scenery. The road to the lighthouse is at the end of the road leading to Linh Buu Pagoda. You can ride a motorbike up to the foot of the mountain. Admission is free, but visitors can leave a small donation to support the maintenance and cleaning.

Temple of Princess Ban Tranh

The temple was built by the Cham people in the late 15th century. Legend says that a Cham princess refused a forced marriage, so the king sent her on a boat to exile. The boat drifted to an island, where she decided to stay, cultivate the land, and help the people fight off foreign invaders. After her death, a shrine was erected in her honor, and she is commemorated annually, known as the Lady of the Land or the Lady of the Island.

Thầy Nại Shrine

The tomb is dedicated to a Chinese physician who made significant contributions to healing the island's inhabitants from its early days. He is revered as the island's guardian deity. According to legend, Master Sai Nai was a Chinese merchant with extensive knowledge of medicinal remedies. During a trading trip to Vietnam, his ship was driven ashore on Phu Quy Island by a storm. Captivated by the island's beauty, he decided to settle there for life. After his death, he was buried by the people, and a tomb complex was built in 1665. The islanders come to the tomb to pray when facing difficulties or when they have a successful fishing season. Every year, the Master's Commemoration Ceremony is held on the 4th day of the 4th lunar month with many traditional rituals.

Visit the island

When visiting Phu Quy Island, you can't miss Hon Den, Hon Trung, Hon Giua, Hon Do, and Hon Tranh. In just about 10 minutes by speedboat, you can walk under the trees and learn about the lives of the island's fishermen, with their traditional lobster diving. Hon Tranh and Hon Den are considered beautiful and safe by locals. Visitors are transported by speedboat, can go fishing, snorkel to admire the coral reefs, and stop to take Instagram-worthy photos. Especially, the fish you catch will be prepared by the guide and eaten raw on the spot…
