Lobster prices have risen sharply, but fishermen and traders alike are facing shortages.
Lobster is a key export item for Dak Lak province. However, following consecutive natural disasters in November last year, fishermen in many coastal areas of Xuan Dai and Cu Mong bays suffered heavy losses. This has led to a shortage of export supply, even though prices have increased since the beginning of the new year.
Along the coastlines of Xuan Dai Bay, once bustling with lobster harvesting and export sales, only a few lobster purchasing points remain. This situation isn't due to export difficulties or traders refusing to buy, but rather because lobsters are scarce. Those households that still have lobsters to sell at this time are considered very lucky.
Like Mr. Le Ba Ri's household (Tuy An Dong commune, Dak Lak province), after the natural disaster last November, his family was left with only half of their 130 shrimp cages in Xuan Dai Bay. With current prices, Mr. Ri can steadily rebuild his business. "The prices are quite high, but right now not all shrimp farmers have a good harvest to sell," Mr. Ri shared.
At lobster purchasing points around the Xuan Dai Bay farming area, small green lobsters are being bought in bulk by traders at around 940,000 VND/kg. Lobsters weighing 320 grams or more are priced from 960,000 to 980,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 120,000 VND/kg compared to before. At these prices, fishermen can make a large profit if they have enough lobster, but currently both fishermen and traders are facing a shortage of supply for export.
With over 27,000 cages located in Xuan Dai Bay and Cu Mong Lagoon, this is one of the most important lobster-producing regions in the country. However, with the severe damage caused by last year's storms and floods, which resulted in the death of over 80% of the lobster population, the lobster supply is expected to decline significantly in the short term and at least for this year.
