Specifically, farmers are selling Japanese purple sweet potatoes at prices ranging from 800,000 to 850,000 VND per quintal (1 quintal = 60kg) (an increase of 100,000 to 150,000 VND per quintal compared to the same period last year). After deducting expenses, growers are making a profit of approximately 400,000 VND per quintal. Meanwhile, white sweet potatoes, paper-white sweet potatoes, and pumpkin-shaped sweet potatoes are being purchased by traders at prices ranging from 180,000 to 280,000 VND per quintal.
Regarding the reasons for the price increase, many traders said that it is due to the reduced acreage of all types of sweet potatoes compared to previous years, especially the acreage of Japanese purple sweet potatoes. In addition, the peak harvest season has not yet arrived, so the prices of all types of sweet potatoes have increased.
According to Ms. Vo Ngoc Tho, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Binh Tan District, as of May 2024, the district had planted 513 hectares of sweet potatoes, a decrease of 286 hectares compared to the same period last year. Due to fluctuating sweet potato prices, people have switched to growing rice, vegetables, or planting fruit trees on raised beds.
According to the Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Binh Tan District, the sweet potato market has now recovered. However, sweet potato consuming markets are increasingly demanding higher quality and product design.
To restore production, farmers are forced to change their farming practices, producing according to GAP and organic standards to create clean, safe food products that are environmentally friendly and meet the demanding requirements of today's market.
To date, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Tan district has coordinated with specialized agencies in Vinh Long province to issue 50 planting area codes (MPCs). Of these, 45 MPCs are for export (42 for sweet potatoes, 1 for durian, and 2 for jackfruit) and 5 MPCs are for domestic use (2 for durian, 1 for sweet potatoes, 1 for jackfruit, and 1 for watermelon).
