With funding support from the French Development Agency in Vietnam (AFD), the Institute of Agricultural Planning and Design (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) recently held a workshop to launch the project “Research on digital transformation of the agricultural sector in the Mekong Delta to serve sustainable agricultural development and adaptation to climate change”.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Planning and Design, in the context of the rapidly unfolding and multifaceted Fourth Industrial Revolution worldwide, promoting digital transformation is considered a crucial key to socio-economic development and an inevitable trend.
A study by the Institute of Agricultural Planning and Design shows that agricultural databases in the Mekong Delta are still lacking; software and hardware have not received adequate investment and are limited to individual projects and programs. Furthermore, the quality of highly skilled human resources in digital agriculture remains limited.
Direct beneficiaries of digital transformation, such as businesses and farmers, have not yet fully grasped their responsibilities. In particular, the public's awareness and skills in using digital technology are still low, posing significant challenges to the region's digital transformation efforts.
The project "Research on Digital Transformation of Agriculture in the Mekong Delta for Sustainable Agricultural Development and Climate Change Adaptation" has six parts. The project will focus on researching and providing an overview of the current status, needs, and challenges of digital transformation in the Mekong Delta's agriculture sector to support the development of the "Digital Transformation and Rural Development Plan for Agriculture and Rural Development, giai đoạn 2021 – 2025, with a vision to 2030".
Simultaneously, the study will pilot the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technology combined with big data and other related technologies to automatically collect and manage data on drought and saltwater intrusion from salinity monitoring stations and irrigation works. This will serve as a basis for analysis and provide timely and accurate information. From there, it will help the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities manage and operate irrigation systems, and make decisions on drought and saltwater intrusion prevention and control.
“Digital transformation in agriculture and rural areas of the Mekong Delta cannot encompass all aspects of digital transformation alone. However, the project will clarify the current state of digital transformation in agriculture; human resources serving digital transformation; infrastructure, equipment, and machinery serving digital transformation; and how to appropriately meet future needs for digital transformation,” Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung assessed the importance of the project.
Mr. Nguyen Do Anh Tuan, Director of the International Cooperation Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), emphasized that the implementation of digital transformation in agriculture must be based on data, focusing on building large-scale data systems for the sector on land, crops, livestock, and aquaculture. This includes building an integrated aerial and ground-based observation and monitoring network to support agricultural activities. From there, it will promote the provision of information on the environment, weather, and soil quality, enabling farmers to improve crop productivity and quality.
