How to quickly relieve itching from mosquito bites?

VnExpressVnExpress20/10/2023

Applying aloe vera gel or anti-itch cream can soothe symptoms in areas bitten by mosquitoes, preventing scratching and rubbing that can cause scarring.

Mosquito saliva contains many substances, including anticoagulants and histamines, which help them suck blood after biting. These substances can also trigger a reaction from the immune system of the person bitten.

In most people, mosquito bites immediately cause itching, discomfort, and swelling. The swelling usually peaks within about 20 minutes and subsides after a few days. However, for people who are sensitive or allergic to substances in mosquito saliva, the reaction can be more severe and last for several weeks.

A hypersensitivity reaction, sometimes called "Skeeter syndrome," occurs when a localized reaction becomes systemic, lasting longer than usual and resulting in more severe swelling. Vigorous scratching can cause the skin to tear, making the wound harder to heal and potentially leaving a scar. The type of scar that forms depends on the body's reaction to the sting. Underlying medical conditions can also affect the healing process.

To reduce itching and swelling after a mosquito bite, keep the affected area clean and moisturized. Applying sunscreen regularly to the bite also prevents it from turning red or dark. You can also try some of the following methods to reduce itching and prevent dark scars from forming.

Aloe vera : The extracts in this plant help soothe stings, accelerate skin healing, and reduce the size of existing scars. They also help reduce inflammation and promote better regeneration of new skin cells in scar tissue.

Anti-itch cream : This type of cream reduces the stinging sensation in mosquito bites, limiting the habit of scratching which can worsen the wound.

Calamine lotion : This is a humectant that draws water from the air and deep within the skin to the area where the lotion is applied. This soothes the skin and replenishes moisture to accelerate healing and new skin formation, reducing scarring.

Massage : Massaging the injection site promotes collagen formation, improves tissue flexibility, increases moisture, and enhances local blood circulation.

Scar creams : Many over-the-counter medications prevent scar formation and contain moisturizing ingredients that support the growth of new skin. You can consult a dermatologist or try several different scar creams yourself.

Exfoliation: This method speeds up the process of removing dead skin cells to allow new, healthy skin layers to form in their place.

To prevent mosquito bites, people should wear long clothing, especially when going out at night, apply insect repellent, and prevent mosquitoes from entering the house with window screens. Anyone experiencing a severe reaction after a mosquito bite should seek medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to mosquito bites may include hives, unusual itching, bruising near the bite, difficulty breathing, fever, and anaphylactic shock.

Mosquitoes can also transmit some bloodborne diseases. If you experience symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, or joint pain, you should see a doctor as soon as possible for diagnosis.
