"Taking short-term gains to support long-term growth" is key to economic development.

Instead of investing haphazardly or following trends, Ms. Chao Thi Kim Ly in Thanh Trung hamlet, Hoa Luu commune, chose a clear path: developing a closed-loop economic system. Using a "short-term gains to support long-term growth" approach, she gradually became prosperous, earning over 120 million VND per year. Her method also opens up a practical way out of poverty for many local women.

Ms. Ly is simultaneously implementing five family economic models: weaving plastic ropes, weaving water hyacinth, raising beef cattle, raising quail, and raising chickens. Each model provides Ms. Ly with a stable income. She shared: “More than six years ago, my family's life was very difficult. After attending a plastic rope weaving class in the local area, I used my free time to earn extra income. Using my existing skills, I learned water hyacinth weaving. With my skillful hands and creativity in creating beautiful designs, I earn more than 4 million VND per month.”

Using her initial accumulated capital, Ms. Ly boldly invested in cattle farming – a long-term economic development strategy. Initially, she raised four cows, two of which were provided as non-refundable livestock support by the local government. Thanks to diligent care and utilizing the natural grass near her home as feed, the herd developed steadily. She sells a batch every two years. To date, Ms. Ly has sold six cows, each yielding a profit of 12-20 million VND. Having gained experience, she switched to breeding cows to ensure a steady supply of offspring and improve production efficiency.

The strength of Ms. Ly's approach lies in the close connection between the different models. Ms. Ly utilizes cow manure to raise earthworms. This is an important step in transforming by-products into resources. Raising earthworms is not only an environmentally friendly method but also a nutritious food source for livestock.

Ms. Ly shared: “In 2021, I continued to develop my model of raising quail indoors and raising chickens for eggs, hatching and selling chicks. Thanks to having a reliable food source from earthworms, the cost of raising chickens and quail has decreased significantly. What I'm excited about is that these models support each other, minimizing risks and improving production and business efficiency. From these models, after deducting expenses, I earn a profit of over 120 million VND annually.”

With sound planning and a closed-loop economic model, Ms. Ly always maintains a proactive stance in the face of market fluctuations while ensuring a stable income. Not only has she enriched her family, but she has also spread her effective business practices to many Khmer ethnic minority women in the local area.

Ms. Thi Niem from Thanh Trung hamlet shared: “Thanks to Ms. Ly's guidance in weaving, I earn an additional 3 million VND per month, making life less difficult for my family. I plan to learn how to raise quail to develop my family's economy.”

Ms. Ly's model shows that if each family knows how to utilize available resources and flexibly innovate their methods, they can completely improve their livelihood and achieve a stable life in their homeland.
