History of the formation of Hau Giang province

Hau Giang province is located within the following geographical coordinates:

- From 9 ° 30'35" to 10 ° 19'17" North latitude;

- From 105 ° 0'14'03" to 106 ° 0'17'57" East longitude;

- To the north, it borders Can Tho city and Vinh Long province ;

- To the south, it borders Bac Lieu province;

- To the east, it borders Soc Trang province;

- To the west, it borders Kien Giang province.

1. The period before 1975

The land that is now Hau Giang province belonged to Long My district of Rach Gia province and Phung Hiep district of Can Tho province.

- During the French colonial period, these administrative boundaries remained unchanged. In 1939, Long My district had 3 sub-districts: An Ninh sub-district, Thanh Tuyen sub-district, and Thanh Giang sub-district. Phung Hiep district in 1939 had 2 sub-districts: Dinh Hoa sub-district and Dinh Phuoc sub-district.

- In 1960, Long My district was separated to form a new district called Duc Long. Both districts were under the jurisdiction of Phong Dinh province.

- On December 21, 1961, the President of the Republic of Vietnam signed a decree establishing Chuong Thien Province. Chuong Thien Province comprised six districts: Long My, Duc Long, Kien Hung, Kien Thien, Kien Long, and Phuoc Long.

2. The period from 1975 to the present

- After April 30, 1975, Hau Giang province was established by merging the former provinces of Phong Dinh, Ba Xuyen, and Chuong Thien. At that time, Hau Giang province included: Can Tho City; Soc Trang Town; Thot Not District; O Mon District; Chau Thanh District; Phung Hiep District; Long My District; Vi Thanh District; Ke Sach District; My Tu District; My Xuyen District; Thanh Tri District; Long Phu District; and Vinh Chau District.

- On December 26, 1991, the Vietnamese National Assembly issued a resolution dividing Hau Giang province into Can Tho province and Soc Trang province. The area of ​​present-day Hau Giang belongs to Can Tho province.

- On July 1, 1999, the Vietnamese Government issued Decree No. 45/1999/ND-CP on the establishment of Vi Thanh town and the renaming of Vi Thanh district to Vi Thuy district.

- On November 6, 2000, the Vietnamese Government issued Decree No. 64/2000/ND-CP establishing Chau Thanh A district in Can Tho province, based on the separation of 22,139 hectares of natural area and 163,357 inhabitants from Chau Thanh district.

- On November 26, 2003, the Vietnamese National Assembly passed Resolution No. 22/2003/QH11 on the division and adjustment of administrative boundaries of some provinces. Accordingly, Can Tho province was divided into Can Tho city (directly under the central government) and the current Hau Giang province. At that time, the number of district-level administrative units consisted of 6 units: Vi Thanh town, Vi Thuy district, Phung Hiep district, Chau Thanh district, Chau Thanh A district, and Long My district.

- On July 26, 2005, the Government issued Decree No. 98/2005/ND-CP on the establishment of Tan Hiep town in Hau Giang province (Tan Hiep town was later renamed Nga Bay town). At that time, Hau Giang province had 7 district-level administrative units: Vi Thanh town, Tan Hiep town (Nga Bay), Vi Thuy district, Phung Hiep district, Chau Thanh district, Chau Thanh A district, and Long My district.

- On October 27, 2006, the Government issued Decree No. 124/2006/ND-CP on adjusting administrative boundaries to establish communes and towns in Vi Thanh town and Long My district; renaming Tan Hiep town to Nga Bay town in Hau Giang province. At this time, Hau Giang province had 7 district-level administrative units: Vi Thanh town, Nga Bay town, Vi Thuy district, Phung Hiep district, Chau Thanh district, Chau Thanh A district, and Long My district.

- On September 23, 2010, the Government issued Resolution No. 34/NQ-CP on the establishment of Vi Thanh City in Hau Giang Province. At that time, Hau Giang Province had 7 district-level administrative units: Vi Thanh City, Nga Bay Town, Vi Thuy District, Phung Hiep District, Chau Thanh District, Chau Thanh A District, and Long My District.

- On May 15, 2015, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly issued Resolution No. 933/NQ-UBTVQH13 on adjusting the administrative boundaries of Long My district to establish Long My town in Hau Giang province. At that time, Hau Giang province had 8 district-level administrative units: Vi Thanh city, Nga Bay town, Vi Thuy district, Phung Hiep district, Chau Thanh district, Chau Thanh A district, Long My district, and Long My town.

- As of April 30, 2018, the number of district-level administrative units in Hau Giang province remained stable at 8 units: Vi Thanh City, Nga Bay Town, Vi Thuy District, Phung Hiep District, Chau Thanh District, Chau Thanh A District, Long My District, and Long My Town, until January 9, 2020.

- On January 10, 2020, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly issued Resolution No. 869/NQ-UBTBQH14 on the rearrangement of district and commune-level administrative units in Hau Giang province. At this time, Hau Giang province has 8 district-level administrative units: Vi Thanh City, Nga Bay City, Vi Thuy District, Phung Hiep District, Chau Thanh District, Chau Thanh A District, Long My District, and Long My Town.
