Mount Co Tien and Hoang Ngu Son in Nha Trang ( Khanh Hoa ) have recently become "hot" destinations attracting many tourists who want to conquer them. However, this place is also known for its rugged and complex terrain, steep slopes, and many hard-to-find trails, so getting lost is very easy.

The Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department of Khanh Hoa province reported that most recently, on the afternoon of June 22nd, rescue forces had to mobilize a specialized rescue vehicle and numerous officers and soldiers to rescue three young men who were lost on Hoang Ngu Son mountain. After nearly three hours of searching in the treacherous terrain, the rescue team reached the group of three lost individuals.

Following a series of accidents involving tourists, the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province has issued a directive on ensuring the security and safety of residents and tourists visiting the Co Tien mountain area. The province has assigned the People's Committee of Nha Trang city to intensify propaganda efforts on fire prevention, firefighting, and rescue; and to strengthen inspection and supervision to ensure safety.

The Provincial People's Committee has assigned the Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa Tourism Association to lead the development of the "Development of Co Tien Mountain Trekking Tourist Destination" project, aiming to exploit the local potential and provide a legal basis for safe exploitation to serve the people and attract tourists.

According to the Khanh Hoa Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Co Tien mountain area has approximately 275.3 hectares of planted forest and over 301.7 hectares of unforested land. Visiting activities by locals and tourists in the area are spontaneous and not managed by any governing body; therefore, coordinating support when tourists encounter problems can be difficult.

Mr. Nguyen Phi Hong Nguyen, Vice Chairman of the Khanh Hoa Travel Association, acknowledged that it is very difficult for authorities to manage tourists who explore and trek independently. Mountain climbing spots in Nha Trang such as Co Tien Mountain and Hoang Ngu Son Mountain have not yet been developed for tourism, and travel companies have not yet launched tours to these areas. "Establishing a systematic management regulation for this activity will not only protect tourists but also ensure the sustainable development of adventure tourism in Khanh Hoa," he said.

Representatives from the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department of Khanh Hoa province advise residents and tourists:

What can you do to avoid getting lost while hiking?

- The first thing to pay attention to is the weather. The weather can change unexpectedly, especially during the rainy season. A heavy rain can make roads slippery, fog can cause you to get lost, or flash floods can be dangerous.

- Avoid descending the mountain at night for inexperienced individuals. Darkness significantly reduces visibility, increasing the risk of getting lost, slipping, or encountering wild animals. It's essential to have knowledge of first aid for snake bites, bee stings, etc.

- It's advisable to travel in groups, bringing GPS devices, flashlights, power banks, first-aid supplies, and plenty of drinking water. More importantly, always inform your family and friends of your specific itinerary and contact authorities immediately if you encounter any problems.

- The risk of forest fires due to carelessness. Currently, Khanh Hoa is in the transitional season, with dry weather easily leading to forest fires. A small ember or a carelessly discarded cigarette can cause a widespread forest fire disaster. Therefore, lighting fires in the forest is strictly prohibited.
