Ngoc Lam village has 1,262 households with more than 3,800 people. Over the past 25 years, since being recognized and maintaining the title of cultural village, the village has always been a model in preserving and protecting the village landscape.

Since the “3 cleans” – clean house, clean kitchen, clean alley – movement launched by the Vietnam Women’s Union in 2010, the awareness of Ngoc Lam people about the living environment has continued to be raised. Not only women members responded to the “3 cleans”, but many people have realized the importance of environmental protection for health.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Hanh's family in Ngoc Lam village has 4 generations living together. The oldest is nearly 90 years old, and the youngest is just over 1 year old. Therefore, to protect the health of his family, Mr. Hanh always pays attention to kitchen and house hygiene. According to Mr. Hanh, the kitchen needs to be neat to have delicious, nutritious, healthy meals. The living space must be fresh and clean to prevent infectious diseases from arising and spreading.

Mr. Hanh said that his family practices “3 clean” not just to follow the trend but also to be aware of the importance of protecting the environment for health. Adults in the family set an example for children to follow, always maintaining public hygiene.

Ms. Trinh Thi Hanh's family has maintained the "3 clean" practice for many years. In addition to regularly cleaning the kitchen area and ensuring the space in the house is always clean and tidy, Ms. Hanh actively participates in cleaning the village roads and alleys. Ms. Hanh said that the village has many models and methods to make the "3 clean" movement implemented synchronously and in order. At the family scale, every household does a good job of classifying waste. Organic waste is composted into humus, fertilizing plants. Inorganic waste is collected and processed according to regulations. People no longer think only about cleaning their own house but encourage each other to maintain public hygiene.

“On weekends, without anyone telling us, we all take the time to clean our houses and the village. Thanks to that, the landscape and environment are always clean. Everyone feels comfortable and relaxed because they live in a fresh atmosphere,” Ms. Hanh happily said.

The awareness of environmental protection in Ngoc Lam village is "nurtured" from the family and spreads to the community. The village has 23 km of roads, and on both sides of the roadsides, there are green flowers and ornamental plants. Cadres, women's union members, veterans, the elderly, and youth union members are the vanguard in implementing the movement of sanitation and environmental protection. Many locations in the village are installed with cameras to monitor security and order as well as manage garbage collection according to regulations.

Thanks to the high consensus and agreement of the people of Ngoc Lam village in protecting the living environment according to "3 clean" has contributed to the old Tan Ky commune soon completing the criteria of a model new rural environment.

Mr. Ha Trung Quy, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Ngoc Lam Village, affirmed that the villagers are deeply aware of the importance of environmental sanitation for health. Therefore, everyone voluntarily maintains hygiene and it has gradually become a beautiful cultural feature in the village.

When the environment is clean and fresh, it is easier and more convenient to carry out disinfection and sterilization campaigns to prevent infectious diseases. Therefore, for many years in Ngoc Lam village, there have been no outbreaks of dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease, chicken pox, etc.

On July 2, 1958, Uncle Ho wrote the article "Patriotic Hygiene" published in Nhan Dan newspaper to raise awareness and responsibility of the community about the role of hygiene in protecting health. On June 19, 2012, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 730/QD-TTg to designate July 2 every year as Patriotic Hygiene Day, improving people's health. In recent years, hygiene and health improvement have been effectively implemented through programs and movements. Typical examples are building new rural areas, green Sunday, waste classification at source, etc.
