"I'm not going back to Barcelona, I'm going to Inter Miami, this decision is 100% confirmed. I heard they had to reduce salaries or sell players and I don't want to go through that," Messi said in an interview for Catalan newspapers Sport and Mundo Deportivo conducted in France.

Messi explained his reasons for not returning to Barcelona, despite it being his top priority. "I would be really excited to go back, but on the other hand, after what I've been through before, I don't want to be in the same situation again. Waiting to see what happens and having my future in someone else's hands is pointless. Therefore, I want to make my own decision, thinking more about myself and my family," Messi shared.
He also said: "I heard that La Liga has accepted everything and allowed me to return, but there is still a lot of work to be done. I heard that Barcelona have to sell players or cut players' salaries and, frankly, I don't want to go through that or benefit from anything related to all of that. I've been accused of so many untrue things during my career at Barcelona and I'm a little tired, I don't want to go through all of that again."
Messi puts his family first.
Messi also revealed the circumstances that led to his departure in the summer of 2021. "When I had to leave La Liga, I accepted that I would be registered, and in the end, that didn't happen. I was afraid the same thing would happen again, and I would rush to leave again, like when I had to go to Paris and stay in a hotel for a long time with my family, my children were at school and still had to stay in the hotel… I wanted to make my own decision, and that's why my return to Barcelona didn't happen. Although I really wanted it to happen, it didn't."
According to Messi: "Choosing Inter Miami will help me step away from the spotlight a bit, think more about my family. I've spent two years not in a great place with my family and I didn't like that. I had a fantastic month, winning the World Cup, but if you ignore that, it's a difficult time. I want to rediscover joy, enjoy everyday life with my family, with my sons... and that contributed to the decision not to go to Barcelona."
