The medal presentation ceremony for Lionel Messi was held at the White House in the early hours of January 5th ( Hanoi time). However, the Argentine superstar was not present. "El Pulga" will appear to receive the award upon his return to the United States.
Messi was honored to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States.
"It's an honor to receive this recognition. I'm very grateful for it. Unfortunately, I had a prior commitment and couldn't attend the White House awards ceremony. Nevertheless, I still greatly appreciate this award," Messi said in a message expressing his inability to attend.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to “individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace , or other important social, public, or private endeavors.” Messi is one of two athletes honored this year, alongside basketball legend Magic Johnson.
Despite only moving to the US to play for Inter Miami last summer, Messi has quickly made a significant impact. Besides helping Inter Miami become a powerhouse in the MLS, the 2022 World Cup champion is also known for his active philanthropic work, particularly through the Leo Messi Foundation and his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
The White House emphasized that Messi received the award for his resounding success in his football career and his tireless efforts in philanthropy, "supporting healthcare and education programs for children around the world."
Prior to Messi, many other sports stars had also been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, including Tiger Woods, Megan Rapinoe, Simone Biles, and Katie Ledecky.
