Fans are angry because Messi only appeared for a short time before "fleeing" - Source: X
Messi is in India as part of a tour, where he is expected to attend concerts, conduct football training sessions for young people, and participate in charity events in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi.
According to Indian media reports, the 2022 World Cup champion walked around the Salt Lake Stadium waving to fans, but a large crowd of supporters approached Messi in an attempt to get close. Due to security concerns, Messi quickly left after only 20 minutes.
This sparked outrage from the public. Video from India's ANI news outlet showed many fans smashing things, throwing broken seats from the stands and other objects onto the field, with some climbing over the fences surrounding the stadium.
Fan Eddie Lal Hmangaihzuala, who traveled nearly 1,500 km from Mizoram in two days to attend the event, said: "I can't believe there were so many missteps in the management. Messi left very quickly; I think he felt unsafe. I hardly saw him."
The tour organizers did not immediately respond to inquiries about the incident, but Satadru Dutta, the main organizer of the event, has been detained by police.
Rajeev Kumar, Director General of Police West Bengal, said: "Satadru Dutta has committed in writing that the ticket money sold for the event will be refunded."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologized to Messi and ordered an investigation into the incident. "I am deeply shocked and concerned by the poor management that occurred today at the Salt Lake Stadium," Banerjee said.
