On the evening of December 13th, swimmer Vo Thi My Tien won the silver medal at the 33rd SEA Games in the women's 400m individual medley after losing to Kamonchanok Kwanmuang (Thailand).
Notably, after leaving the medal podium, My Tien had a conversation with Mr. Dinh Viet Hung (Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association), who had just presented her with the medal in this event.
At the beginning of the conversation, My Tien was still smiling. But later, when Mr. Hung spoke while demonstrating swimming movements, My Tien began to purse her lips sadly and shed tears.
Afterward, the 20-year-old girl quickly left, covering her face and crying in front of many people, then went straight to the locker room instead of approaching the waiting Vietnamese media to take pictures of her holding the silver medal.

The coaching staff of the Vietnamese swimming team stated that Mr. Hung, while encouraging swimmer My Tien, unintentionally made hurtful remarks that upset her after she had given her best effort in the race.
But even if unintentional, this action is unacceptable given that it took place in front of a large audience and the media from various countries. Social media was subsequently flooded with images of Mr. Hung pointing and talking to My Tien, as well as images of the swimmer walking and crying.
Immediately after the incident on the evening of December 13th, the leaders of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at the 33rd SEA Games issued a reprimand and criticism to Mr. Dinh Viet Hung. The leaders of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation stated that they completely disagreed with Mr. Hung's actions of "instructing" athlete My Tien right at the swimming pool, causing the athlete to burst into tears after competing and winning a medal.
At the same time, Vietnamese sports leaders requested that team leaders and representatives of national sports federations and associations should share and encourage athletes throughout their training and competition at the 33rd SEA Games.
