On the afternoon of December 14th, the long-distance events of athletics at the 33rd SEA Games, including the 20km race walk and the men's and women's marathon, were held in Bangkok (Thailand). These events are extremely demanding, especially since the organizers scheduled them for 5 PM, a time when temperatures are still high, significantly impacting the athletes' physical condition.
In the women's marathon, two Vietnamese representatives, Bui Thi Thu Ha and Hoang Thi Ngoc Hoa, competed. After finishing in third place and winning a bronze medal, Bui Thi Thu Ha became exhausted and fainted. The coaching staff quickly took her to an ambulance for first aid. Afterwards, Thu Ha's health stabilized and she was able to walk on her own.
Meanwhile, Hoang Thi Ngoc Hoa experienced a more serious incident. About 3 km from the finish line, the athlete felt dizzy and collapsed while competing for a medal. Ngoc Hoa was taken to the hospital by ambulance and examined due to her unstable health condition.
In the women's 20km race walk, athlete Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc also had to withdraw after feeling dizzy at the 11th kilometer. Despite receiving timely medical attention and recovering, Thanh Phuc was unable to continue competing, missing the opportunity to win a medal.
In the men's marathon, Hoang Nguyen Thanh finished in 4th place with a time of 2 hours and 38 minutes.
Marathon is the most demanding event in athletics, covering a distance of 42.195 km. In hot weather conditions, the risk of heatstroke and physical exhaustion is a major challenge for athletes.
