Coach Tran Quoc Cuong shared that he was surprised that Pham Quang Huy was the first to be eliminated in the final of his specialty event, the 10m air pistol. This is the event that brought Huy a prestigious gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games. The shooter from Hai Phong had prepared thoroughly for this SEA Games, so his unsuccessful performance was a disappointment for him and the coaching staff.

Quang Huy couldn't explain why his performance wasn't as good as he'd hoped. "In shooting, anything can happen, like the Indonesian athlete who achieved the best result in the qualifying round but didn't win the gold medal in the final. The opponent performed better, and I didn't get to show my full potential. It wasn't entirely due to pressure, as I'm used to competing internationally. I'll learn from this experience and focus my determination on the remaining events," he shared.
Nguyen Thi That Missed Out on Gold
Yesterday, cyclist Nguyen Thi That was defeated in her specialty event, the points sprint, where she is the defending champion. The three-time Asian champion was highly regarded and ready to compete with her rival Jutatip of host country Thailand. However, she only finished third, behind both Jutatip and Zubir (Malaysia).
Commenting on Nguyen Thi That's performance with the women's team, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, General Secretary of the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation, said: "The Vietnamese athletes competed with great effort to achieve the highest result against Jutatip of Thailand. At the corner 100 meters from the finish line, the rider who entered the corner first had a greater chance of winning. The Thai and Malaysian teams performed better and overtook Nguyen Thi That."
Nguyen Thi That and the Vietnamese women's cycling team still have a chance to compete for the SEA Games 33 gold medal in the mass start event. This event takes place on a course with steep hills, posing a significant challenge for the Vietnamese cyclists. Hopefully, the coaching staff will have a sound strategy and Nguyen Thi That will have a spectacular performance to bring home the gold medal for Vietnamese cycling after a series of unsuccessful competitions.
In weightlifting, top contender Tran Minh Tri failed to defend his gold medal in the 65 kg category. His impatience in the clean and jerk, coupled with immense psychological pressure, led to his failure in all three attempts, resulting in no overall ranking.
Vietnamese karate affirmed its number one position at the 33rd SEA Games by winning a total of 6 gold medals. However, on the final day of competition yesterday, the men's sparring team suffered a disappointing loss to Malaysia despite having the upper hand.
In athletics, Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc had to withdraw midway through the race walking event, in which she had won three consecutive SEA Games gold medals.
