Huỳnh Như scored a goal in 6 consecutive SEA Games. |
In their quest to defend their SEA Games gold medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33) currently taking place in Thailand, coach Mai Duc Chung's team crushed Indonesia 5-0 to secure a place in the women's football final.
With her final goal sealing the 5-0 victory, striker Huỳnh Như officially made history in regional women's football by becoming the first player to score in six consecutive SEA Games.
Even in the history of football at the Southeast Asian Games, no male or female player has ever scored in six consecutive tournaments.
At 34 years old, the legendary striker of the Vietnamese women's national team continues to demonstrate her extraordinary class and resilience, despite mostly coming on as a substitute in this tournament. Her goal at the 33rd SEA Games helped her complete an impressive streak that began at the 27th SEA Games in 2013 in Myanmar.
Huỳnh Như's impressive goal-scoring journey spans 12 years, starting with her first appearance at the 27th SEA Games (2013, Myanmar), even though the Vietnamese women's team only won a silver medal that year.
At the SEA Games 29 (2017, Malaysia), SEA Games 30 (2019, Philippines), SEA Games 31 (2021, Vietnam), and SEA Games 32 (2023, Cambodia), Huynh Nhu continued to score crucial goals, helping the Vietnamese women's team win four consecutive gold medals.
Huỳnh Như's achievement of winning four consecutive SEA Games gold medals from 2017 to 2023 is also a rare record for the tournament.
Prior to the 33rd SEA Games, Huỳnh Như had scored 12 goals in various SEA Games. This new achievement is not only an unprecedented record in Southeast Asian women's football but also affirms her iconic status in Vietnamese football.
