After a relatively easy group stage, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team made adjustments for their semi-final match against the Philippines on the afternoon of December 14th. In particular, star player Tran Thi Thanh Thuy played more, participating throughout the entire match.
The remaining positions are also mostly settled. However, there is still one position that fans are curious about, as they don't know who will be the starting player.
That position is setter, where both Doan Thi Lam Oanh and Vo Thi Kim Thoa are constantly swapping places. Over the years, Lam Oanh has always been the first choice of coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet.
She was a regular starter in important matches. Then, depending on the game's progress, he might bring Kim Thoa in to adjust the tactics.

However, at this SEA Games, Coach Kiet is causing quite a bit of confusion among fans. In the group stage against weaker opponents, Kim Thoa was given more playing time. This could be explained by several reasons, such as keeping his tactics secret, resting Lam Oanh, or experimenting with different strategies.
But then, in the crucial semi-final match against the Philippines, Lam Oanh continued to be a substitute. Meanwhile, Kim Thoa started from the beginning. Fans immediately questioned this, because in fact, in the first set, the VTV Binh Dien Long An player had many poor passes.
Many of Kim Thoa's shots missed Thanh Thúy's reach. The passes to position number 3 for Bích Thủy to finish were also not well-coordinated. Therefore, towards the end of the set, when both teams were locked in a tense struggle, Lâm Oanh was brought in, and the score difference gradually built up for the Vietnamese women's volleyball team.

In the next two sets, the Philippines also ran out of steam and couldn't maintain the pressure. Therefore, the work for Lam Oanh and Kim Thoa became easier. Kim Thoa, in particular, made more accurate passes to help her teammates get into position.
On a volleyball forum with over 30,000 members, the most hotly debated topic is the choice between Lam Oanh and Kim Thoa. It's truly difficult to predict who will be the starting player in the final match against Thailand at this point.
Lam Oanh's passing was more consistent, but lacked unpredictability. Meanwhile, Kim Thoa made some surprising passes, but often lacked coordination with her teammates.
Furthermore, Lam Oanh is taller, so she can provide better blocking support. That's also a weakness of Kim Thoa. The setter position for the Vietnamese women's volleyball team is truly a big mystery right now.
It's also possible that coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet is trying to unsettle Thailand ahead of this year's final.
The SEA Games 33 women's volleyball final will take place between Vietnam and Thailand at 5:30 PM tomorrow, December 15th.
