DNVN - On January 7th, Meta faced opposition from researchers when it announced it would halt its third-party fact-checking program in the US, due to concerns that it could increase misinformation.
In the announcement, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that Meta will cease using fact-checking programs by independent organizations in the US. Instead, the company will roll out a “Community Notes” feature in the coming months and develop this model throughout the year, allowing users to add context to controversial posts.
Social media platform X is also implementing a similar note-taking feature, but many researchers remain skeptical about its ability to reduce misinformation.
Commenting on Meta's move, Ross Burley, co-founder of the Center for Information Recovery, called it a major setback in the context of the rapidly increasing misinformation and harmful content.
Professor Michael Wagner of the University of Wisconsin-Madison argues that Meta's decision to let users self-monitor and handle misinformation on its platform is an act of shirking social responsibility. Meanwhile, Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn suggests that Meta is trying to avoid accountability.
Conversely, US President-elect Donald Trump expressed support for Meta's decision.
Previously, third-party fact-checking programs helped reduce the frequency of misinformation appearing on users' news feeds. Those intending to share posts deemed misleading would receive a warning with a specific reason.
According to a 2023 survey by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), Meta's program and external funding are the "primary source of income" for 137 fact-checking organizations in various countries. Meta's decision is expected to impact the income of these organizations in the US. IFCN Director Angie Holan believes that this policy change will also reduce social media users' access to accurate information.
