Meta plans to lay the world's longest underwater cable connecting the US and India.

Meta has just announced plans to build the world's longest underwater cable project, aiming to connect the United States, India, South Africa, Brazil, and other regions.

According to Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, the project, called "Waterworth," involves a 50,000-kilometer underwater cable, longer than the Earth's circumference. The Guardian reports that this will be the longest underwater cable ever built using a system of 24 pairs of optical fibers, providing higher capacity and supporting the company's artificial intelligence (AI) projects.

Meta stated: "The Waterworth project will bring industry-leading connectivity to the U.S., India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions. This project will foster greater economic cooperation, facilitate digital integration, and unlock opportunities for technological development in these regions."

Meta says Waterworth will help India accelerate the growth of its digital infrastructure and support the country's ambitious plans for a digital economy.

"We have driven infrastructure innovation with various partners over the past decade, developing more than 20 submarine cable routes. This includes several industry-leading submarine cable deployments with 24 pairs of optical fibers – compared to the typical 8-16 pairs of optical fibers in other new systems," according to Meta.

Meta emphasized that they will install the cable system at depths of up to 7,000 meters and use advanced cable burial techniques in areas with a high risk of breakage, such as shallow waters near the coast, to avoid damage from ship anchors and other hazards.

According to The Guardian , over 95% of the world's internet traffic is transmitted via undersea cables, raising concerns about the possibility of attacks or accidents, as well as becoming targets in geopolitical tensions and conflicts.

In January, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) launched a mission to enhance monitoring of ships in the Baltic Sea after key underwater cables were damaged in 2024.

The UK currently has around 60 undersea cables carrying 99% of the data connecting it to the outside world. It recently issued a call to protect its undersea cable infrastructure from threats and is studying scenarios for "recovery in the event of major and prolonged disruptions".
